The bolus works fine exactly as in my book.We have the powders already mixed and in Germany, we mixed them with sesame oil and inserted a more liquid type concoction into the rectum when there was difficulty with inserting the boluses.Most people could not hold the mixture as long, but it was much less stressful.
I don't really want to comment on other people's products so please ask them about their products.However, I am not enthusiastic aout coffee enemas.I would be much more concerned with figuring out the transit time through the colon (eat sesame seeds and wait to see when they come out).If the transit time is more than 24 hours, there will be fermentation in the GI tract so that is a problem.Take Kolorex and mild probiotics.
I would also take a medical history and look for parasite risks:pets, travel, mosquitos, etc.
The ingredients for the bolus are provided as a powder, already blended. Interested persons need to acquire the cocoa butter separately. It is important that everyone who wishes to try Dr. Christopher's herbal bolus regime make the boluses correctly. Be sure you have the needed equipment and that you have a way to control the temperature while melting the cocoa butter.
Cocoa butter (Note: Dr. Christopher called Coconut oil "Cocoa butter; Cacao butter melts at a little higher temperature) melts at a very low temperature which is why it is used as the binding agent for the powdered herbs. The bolus has to melt at body temperature so that the boluses will disburse and the herbs will move throughout the reproductive and eliminatory systems.
A slow cooker is one option. I used to have one that had a very low temperature setting. It cost about $8, was small, and was perfect for the job, but it vanished. A yoghurt maker with a one quart capacity is another possibility, a nearly perfect guarantee that the herbs will not be burned. A double boiler is another option, but you want to be sure your temperatures are really low. The herbs do not need to be cooked at all. In fact, it is probably better not to cook them. They just need to be stirred into the melted cocoa butter.
Melt the cocoa butter. Do not allow it to bubble or burn!
Stir in the powdered herbs a little at a time. Stop if the mixture becomes too stiff. If the mixture is too thin, add some turmeric powder. If it is too thick, add some more coconut butter.
Allow the mixture to cool enough that you can handle it without burning yourself.
You have two main options:
Roll the mixture as if making a pie crust. Then slice it into narrow strips.
Separate a little bit of the mixture as if making cookies, and roll each into something about the size of the last two sections of your baby finger, 2-3 inches long and approximately the same thickness as your smallest finger.
Wrap each bolus individually (in wax paper) and put in the refrigerator.
I generally find that I can only make 3-5 boluses before I have to put the finished ones into the refrigerator. This is good. If the boluses melt into little puddles on the table where you are working, you know they will dissolve and disburse in your body! It they are too stiff, something went wrong and they aren't going to melt in your body. In the eleven years I have worked with these, only two people told me the boluses wouldn't dissolve.
There is enough in herbal powder in the package we supply to make about 60 boluses, a two-month supply. Obviously, it depends on the size of the boluses whether you will end up with 20 or 100!
Most women continue the use for two months. A few, often those with a long history of candidaalbicans or other infections of the reproductive system, continue for six months. Two or three women told me that itchiness due to candida increased a bit during the first days of use. Most women said that the boluses are extremely comfortable and are actually relaxing and soothing to the body.
It is a lot of fun to make the boluses if you have some friends over to help. It can be a substitute for an old-fashioned quilting or canning party.
The Garden Patience blend is Dr. Christopher's recommendation and comes from the company operated by his son. It can be steeped as a tea and consumed as a beverage as well as used as a douche. For best results, use it both ways, being very careful of the temperature used for douching. You can also use chamomile tea.
The boluses should be inserted at night before going to bed. Some women need to use panty liners to prevent spotting or soiling of bed linens. Douching can be performed in the morning. Most women tell me that there is no evidence of the herbs by morning. The body has therefore absorbed everything!

For tumors of the colon as well as the male and female reproductive systems.Can also be used for cervical dysplasia, hyperplasia, precancerous conditions, and candidaalbicans/yeast.
Use equal parts of the following herbs (You can buy these pre-mixed from her site as "Herbal Bolus Powder" or from Natasha at http://theherbfinder.com): Squaw vine Chickweed Slippery elm bark Comfrey root Cocoa butter (she means EV coconut oil) Goldenseal root Mullein leaves Marshmallow root Yellow dock root
Instructions: since herbs powder differently, grind each herb separately. Blend the powders. Melt the cocoa butter in a crock pot or double boiler (at low temp). As soon as the cocoa butter has liquified, stir the herbs into the cocoa butter and mix thoroughly. Allow the herbs to cook in the cocoa butter for about 20 minutes. Stir continuously and be careful that the herbs do not burn. After twenty minutes, unplug the crock pot and allow the mixture to cool. As the consistency becomes thicker, watch carefully. When it is firm enough to shape, yet still malleable, shape into suppositories the thickness of a pencil or finger. Make them an inch to an inch-and-a-half long, wrap individually in waxed paper and store in the refrigerator until needed.
Use: insert vaginally and/or rectally, as needed, before bedtime daily or every other day, 6 days each week until symptoms disappear.

Walmart sells distilled water, although getting a Waterwise distiller is cheaper in the long run. Without getting an analysis of each bottle of bottled water, you can’t be sure what’s in it. Distilled water is as pure as there is.
I think it’s important to become totally compliant with a protocol immediately – all of the aspects, especially the diet – and fine tune it a little as you go along (not a lot of complete about-faces and totally contradictory things because you need to try something completely and give it time to see it work). Half-heartedly doing a few things but not others won’t accomplish much. They recommend only holding off a few weeks after diagnosis to investigate treatments, and then to start on a protocol completely. It’s a big lifestyle change and it’s hard to unlearn all of the misinformation that the government, media and agribusiness has been brainwashing us with all of our lives, but it can be done (speaking as someone who has done it personally). It just takes conviction and commitment (along with objective assessment, as you go along, in case minor refinements are needed). Each of us is an individual and what works for one won’t necessarily work for another: that’s why it’s somewhat of a discovery process as you go along and fine-tune it (while you’re totally following it).

Coffee enemas during the initial stages of treatment are important to maintain regular detoxification from the overburdened liver. Coffee specifically draws toxins from the liver through the mesentery of the small intestine. While a small amount of caffeine may be absorbed, the detoxification is of far greater benefit.
Dissolve 3 tablespoonfuls of ground organic coffee in one quart of water. Boil for three minutes and then simmer for another fifteen minutes. Strain and allow cooling to body temperature. Place in an enema bag, which can be purchased from a pharmacy. Be sure the stopper on the enema bag hose is closed. Apply oil to the enema tip and the anus. Position a place in the bathroom with towels and blankets as necessary. Hang the bag no higher than 3 feet above the area where you will be laying on the floor. Lay on your back and gently insert the oiled enema tip into the anus. Try to have your feet slightly elevated, perhaps against the wall near where enema bag is hanging. Allow the coffee to flow gently into the bowel slowly so as not to cause cramping. Gentle pressure on the bag will encourage the flow. At the same time massage upwards on the left side of the abdomen from the descending colon to the transverse colon just under the ribs and then down to ascending colon on the right side of the abdomen. Retain for 4 or 5 minutes and expel. Often within 20-30 minutes the patient will expel up to a gallon of fluid. Initially this can be done once or twice daily for several days in succession. Then the interval can be spread out to a couple of times a week and finally once a week. It can be used anytime the patient feels bogged down and tired, or has pain. (This needs to be done each time prior to using the paste)
First, mix oil-soluble ingredients in enough olive oil to make a paste; don't make it quite as thick if the cancer is farther up in the colon so that it can flow there (open capsules and shake out ingredients into mixture), then thoroughly mix in lecithin (it's an emulsifier that helps oil & water to mix). Laetrile (“Vitamin B-17”):
Tablet sizes are from 100-500mg. For some patients in whom gastric acidity is deficient, side reactions of weakness or headache following oral administration may be avoided by taking some apple cider vinegar (1-2tsp in half a glass of water) or a betaine hydrochloride tablet to prevent these unpleasant reactions. When higher dosages are desired, the IV route is recommended (done at Dr. Contreras’ Oasis hospital and others in Mexicohttp://www.cancure.org/directory_mexican_clinics.htm ). Note: they do this with a comprehensive protocol that includes plenty of enzymes, raw vegetables blenderized along with some fish and chicken, immune boosters, anti-metastasis supplements, fiber, etc. IV dosage may range from 3-9g or even 12g/d and is administered into a vein, preferably between meals.
Water solutions of B-17 may be applied to open wounds by saturating several layers of gauze to cover the raw area.
B-17 water solution may be used as an overnight retention enema also, following a cleansing irrigation. (B-17 can be added to the bolus or oil/DMSO herbal enema mixture, or alternated with one or both of them). This may be a particularly good way to get nitrioloside directly to colon tumors (although, it is also absorbed systemically this way, and can reach other parts of the body).
B-17 in solutions may be made into a water-soluble salve and applied to localized skin lesions.
B-17 in a solution of 1gram/cc of DMSO has also been used successfully for direct application.
It is sometimes advisable to change the dosage. The sense of well-being of a patient is probably the best practical guide to decide if a change is indicated. The sense of well-being is influenced by the patient’s capacity to dispose of the toxic products that result from tumor breakdown.
For example, when drainage from a cancer area is inadequate, or detoxification and excretion are impaired, toxins released by lysed cancer cells may result in an occasional episode of weakness, dizziness, or increase body temperature, or other evidence of toxemia, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever or mental confusion. High dosage could be followed by a higher rate of tumor destruction and toxemia than a patient can tolerate. Such toxemia is usually temporary, lasting from a few hours to one day, and subsiding as detoxification and elimination adjust to the rate of tumor breakdown. Should the patient’s impaired sense of well-being continue, however, the dosage level should be decreased accordingly, and perhaps raised again as well-being is restored.
Administer B-17 and enzymes separately. Dr. Contreras prescribes B-17 one hour before meals, Pangamic Acid (vitamin B-15) at the end of each meal, and enzymes mid-morning and at .
Foods high in B-17 (500mg nitriloside per 100g of food)
Many users eat raw apricot kernels during the day, and add 1tsp-1TBS/serving of kernels or seeds (ground in a small coffee grinder, such as the Proctor-Silex grinder used for flax seeds) to their vegetable blend (from the Vitamix) or green drink.
Sauerkraut is good for intestinal & colon problems and colon cancer. I eat Kroeger's Chopped Sauerkraut (with only cabbage, water and salt -- no sugar, artificial or smoke flavorings, msg, etc.) every day. Eating celery and parsley (best in Vitamix), a couple organic apples/day, onions are good.
Freshly-ground organic flaxseed [1TBS/d] (for the gum/fiber benefits and some lignans -- in addition to the concentrated flax lignans) and Modified Citrus Pectin are recommended. Also, I would get a variable-speed Vitamix blender and use specific vegetables (particularly cruciferous) mentioned on my RawFood and main Cancer Protocol pages. I mix my 3TBS/d organic flaxseed [AW 476856, Arrowhead Mills Organic Golden Flax Seeds -- 14 Ounces, $1.95*16/14 = 2.23/lb (http://www.vitacost.com/Arrowhead-Mills-Organic-Golden-Flax-Seeds)], or (http://www.wheatgrasskits.com/flaxkit.htm) that I grind in a Proctor-Silex coffee grinder in some steel-cut or whole oats, along with some pure water (distilled water from a Waterwise distiller with no chlorine, fluorine, or other impurities). Ground flaxseed goes rancid within 15 minutes (at room temperature) of being exposed to air, so it's best to grind it fresh each time and cover it with some water (which it'll absorb in a couple minutes). We pre-soak our oats in the refrigerator over night to reduce cooking time. See my Metabolic Typing page re protein/carb/balanced types, also.
It's best to take both water and oil-soluble forms of various vitamins, along with using the Vitamix and selected vegetables. I take New Chapter Berry Green and Miracle Reds (1TBS/d of each), also.
Taking IP6 and Artemisinin helps, along with avoiding vitamin and meat sources of iron is helpful (not so much vegetable sources), since cancer feeds on iron. Taking acids, such as the ascorbic acid form of vitamin C along with an iron-containing food causes even more of the iron to be absorbed. I use Magnesium or calcium ascorbate and don't eat red meat (beef or pork) -- just free-range, grass-fed chicken and line-caught, wild fish (mostly canned Alaskan Salmon). Avoid farmed fish, and any larger fish because they're high in mercury. Note: these are a modified form of chelation; they bind iron so that cancer cannot use it to grow fast. Since they also bind some good minerals (e.g., calcium, magnesium, zinc, etc.), it's important to take them away from your good minerals (and to take some of the good minerals daily).
Eating lots of broccoli sprouts (along with taking sufficient iodine -- I take 3 drops of Tri-Quench (http://www.tahomadispensary.com/istar.asp?a=29&search=tri-quench) 2AM + 1PM, because eating lots of cruciferous vegetables tends to block absorption of iodine and can cause hypothyroidism if you don't compensate).Also, heat is used to kill cancers accessible from the surface, such as breast and prostate cancer: this may be a possibility. A paste of organic berry extracts, ellagic acid/pomegranate and broccoli sprouts is helpful internally or externally.
Many beans are very low on glycemic index (they don't cause much insulin response, so they're good). Fruits are generally discouraged on the anticancer diet despite the fact that they contain some very powerful anticancer and antioxidant flavonoids. They should especially be avoided by patients already having metastasis. Patients without metastasis can enjoy fruits with a low sugar content, such as strawberries, raspberries and grapefruit, but only in limited quantities (no more than 1/2 cup a day), and they should have them after they have finished their meal -- not alone as a snack -- because when the stomach is full, the sugar from the strawberries is absorbed slowly (especially with fat-containing meals). Raspberries contain very high levels of a cancer-inhibiting flavononid called ellagic acid, but only low-sugar/sugar-free (with no artificial sweeteners) extracts should be used by patients with metastasis.
Iceberg lettuce has no nutritional value.
Avoid any products containing carrageenan: it's very bad for colon cancer.
Avoid drinking alcohol, tobacco.
Don't take isolated beta carotene; it can be a pro-oxidant.
Avoid peanuts and peanut products. Avoid almonds since they now can be treated with the carcinogen propylene oxide (per USDA) and still labeled "raw" unless they're going to be shipped outside of the U.S. (then they have to tell the truth!)
Avoid the amino acid Methionine (stimulates cancer).
Avoid bad fats (any type of fat that is hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated, trans-fats, and omega-6 fats from peanuts and peanut oil, safflower oil, sunflower seeds & oil, corn, soybean or canola oil, etc.)
Avoid soy and genistein products.
Try not to get overwhelmed by all of the information; sometimes it's piecemeal out of necessity, because there is just so much to learn -- and unlearn -- so quickly (after years of being brainwashed by the agribusiness and drug-company controlled media and government agencies), but keep the faith! It’s important that you do some imagery/ visualization to help yourself get better. It’s a technique that strengthens the immune system. I taught Bernie Siegel about it in the early 1970's when my first wife had Hodgkin's disease. I didn't know as much about natural medicine back then, so I augmented radiation with imagery and the doctors at Yale, including Bernie, said that she recovered so quickly that they wanted to know all about the imagery (and said to keep on doing it). Shortly afterwards, Bernie quit surgery and went into teaching about imagery full-time.
My method of imagery/visualization is quite simple. You can picture opposing armies, with your army winning, or cotton-ball shaped white cells swallowing up and killing black dots representing germs or cancer cells. While you're doing this, tighten up your solar plexus muscles and hold them for a few seconds until you visualize the cancer (germs, if you're using visualization to fight an infection) being dead and your white cells (or army) victorious. Next, I visualize a peaceful, relaxing scene -- it can be any you want. Mine is lying beside a babbling brook in the grass, under a blue sky with puffy clouds with birds singing and being totally healthy and happy. The key is to go away from the visualization really believing that you've beaten it. I had a friend who had Lymphoma do this for a few minutes twice a day. (She beat it). You can modify this, for example picture Pac-men or opposing armies, or etc. The important part is to each time visualize winning and leave it feeling at peace and healthy. Many people find that it helps to listen to some healing/meditation music (such as Reiki or Merlin's Magic, available on Amazon) while you’re doing imagery and visualization; it relaxes them and contributes to their healing experience.
The state of your mind and spirit is also very important in health and to overcome disease. Your mind can help you heal or die. This is the principle of voodoo: people who are cursed and believe in its power to kill them give up the will to live, stop eating, their white blood cell count plummets, and they die. People who don't believe in it don't die (some witch doctors have resorted to killing them in the traditional way in order to avoid losing faith amongst the "believers". Also, many of us know of a person who has died from some cause or another and soon afterwards the spouse dies because they simply have given up the will to live, making it easy for a heart attack, cancer or some other opportunistic disease to develop and kill them. Use your mind to enhance your recovery from disease, rather than deter from it by using imagery or visualization.
Your belief system can also trap you into passively accepting treatments that have very low percentages of success (such as going with the flow, or with whatever the insurance company will pay for), rather than allowing you to make an objective study of treatments with a better chance of success.When you have a disease, particularly a serious one, it's imperative that you make the effort to do your homework and explore all possible alternatives with an open mind. Too often, patients refuse to even consider treatments other than surgery, chemotherapy or radiation until it is too late and they are at death's door. In general, alternative treatments have a much higher success rate with degenerative diseases if they are done sooner in the disease process, before the body is destroyed by surgery, chemo, radiation or drugs, than when death is inevitable. Some things I wanted to be sure not to forget to mention: Dr. Blaylock says to avoid canola oil, all white starches, whole wheat bread (whole grains that are ground), etc. and to use even whole grains (that you have to chew) sparingly. Avoid sugars such as sucrose, glucose, dextrose, fructose, etc. I have a slice (or two, if I have very little oatmeal and other grains that day) of Ezekiel bread (not toasted -- browning meats or starches causes cancer, especially of the digestive tract and intestines) with a little soft goat's cheese spread on it. Hot pepper (cayenne) kills cancer cells and helps the lungs and circulatory tract; I use it on everything.
We use Morton Lite Salt in moderation on our food and in our Vitamix juice instead of regular salt (has a balance of potassium & sodium).
Chewing up whole organic apples (especially McIntosh if crisp and tasty, or Granny Smith -- avoid overly-sweet fruit -- wash/scrub well first; peel if coated with wax) gives you beneficial fiber (in addition or instead of an extract), along with Berry Green, Miracle Reds, Now brand organic Barley and Wheat Grass, specific blended vegetables in a Vitamix blender, freshly-ground organic flaxseeds, etc. There are high rates of colorectal cancerin countries that eat a lot of red meats and saturated fat from meats (as opposed to saturated fats like non-hydrogenated extra-virgin coconut oil, which I take, along with no red meat -- pork is a red meat). Countries with low rates (Ecuador has 1/7 as much as the US and 1/15 as much as the former Czechoslavakia) have diets containing lots of all kinds of fiber and gums (there are 7 kinds) from some whole grains along with legumes, vegetables (e.g., a little wild rice or brown rice with beans -- go easy on the starch and get most of it from vegetables) along with some protein from free-range, organic chicken and wild, line-caught fish (smaller salmon, herring and sardines are highest in omega-3 oils). Avoid tilefish, swordfish, shark, large tuna, king mackerel, king salmon, any farmed fish, large fish.
I take both water and oil-soluble forms of vitamin E (400iu of water-soluble succinate is in Jarrow Multi Easy, and I take 1AM + 1PM Full Spectrum Vitamin E) and Vitamin C (for the water-soluble, some calcium ascorbate is in JME + I take some Now Magnesium Ascorbate powder in AM & PM; for the oil-soluble, I take 1/d ascorbyl palmitate).
It’s important to consider household chemicals, air quality, what foods/diet you're following (because what's good for one person can actually harm another -- one size does not fit all, and not every cancer patient is too acidic), weed killers, cosmetics, deodorant, hair spray, skin creams, pesticides and hormones in foods and from plastics, water quality, etc. -- see my website and Blaylock's book & newsletters for more information.
I eat some canned Alaskan wild-caught salmon almost every day (along with Calcium and phosphorous in a 2.5 to 1 ratio to balance the protein intake) because I'm a protein type and need about 35% of my calories from protein and 35% from healthy fats, with 30% from carbs (mostly vegetables).

*Use either extravirgin olive oil and/or extravirgin coconut oil. (Check all processed foods –most use the bad oils)
*Curcumin 500 mg (Dr. Williams and new clinical studies now say 4-8g/d total Curcumin) and quercetin 500 mg (1500mg/d) should be mixed with the olive oil) about one tablespoon full) - mix well and take three times a day. Together they powerfully inhibit cancer cell growth and prevent many of the complications of chemotherapy. In addition, studies have shown that they enhance the effectiveness of the chemotherapy and radiation treatments.
*Ellagic acid – Also a very powerful cancer inhibitor.
*Natural vitamin E (mixed tocopherols) with high gamma-E. 1000 IU a day (take oil + water soluble forms)
*Resveratrol (the only brand to get is Longevinex brand) shown to inhibit cancer cell growth and to protect normal tissues from chemotherapy.
From Dr. Russell Blaylock: "The produce with the greatest anticancer effect are the cruciferous vegetables, which include broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kale, cabbage, cauliflower, etc.) This is not to say that other vegetables are of no help because beets, parsley, spinach (go easy on it -- high in cancer-promoting iron), carrots, and tomatoes have all been shown to have equally powerful anticancer effects. In general, fruits and vegetables with deep colors have the greatest anti-cancer effectiveness.
"Vegetable blenders have two real advantages over juicers. First, they do not waste anything. In addition to the thousands of nutrients inside them, plants contain numerous, often powerful phytochemicals on the outside of their leaves and stems. Among these phytochemicals are glycoproteins and polysaccharides, which regulate immunity. Furthermore, plant pulp contains a lot of fiber. Secondly, vegetable blenders are a snap to clean. The blender must be powerful enough to turn vegetables and fruits into liquids. I use the VitaMix 5000.
"When juicing or blenderizingfruits or vegetables, of even more importance than using the right machine is choosing the right ingredients. In addition, you need to thoroughly clean the fruits and vegetables with a vegetable wash and scrubber before you put them in the machine.
"One of the common mistakes that people make when preparing juice is using only their favorite vegetables or fruits, usually based on taste. For example, many people use only carrots. Using only one vegetable is wrong for two reasons. First, some vegetables are very high in sugar or starch which can stimulate cancer growth. (Note that excess copper and iron also stimulate cancer growth, and that a ferritin test is more appropriate to measure iron levels in cancer patients than the standard RBC and hematocrit, since the body attempts to bind and hide iron to protect itself.) Second, you miss important phytochemicals found in other plants. Some special anticancer flavonoids are found only in certain vegetables andnot others. Only by mixing various types of vegetables can you take full advantage of these potent anticancer chemicals.
"For example, onions, teas and apples contain a powerful cancer inhibitor called quercetin. Parsley and celery contain an anticancer flavonoid called apigenin, while green (and white, which is lower in harmful fluoride) tea has a series of chemicals, including epigallocatechin gallate, catechin, and epicatechin that not only suppress tumors, but also protect the heart and blood vessels. The more of these specific (see his book for more) vegetables you mix together, the more likely your cancer will either be suppressed or eliminated, especially if you combine this dietary therapy with conventional treatments (or supplements, enzymes, herbs, immune boosters, etc.)
Choose at least 5 vegetables from the list below. If possible, use all the vegetables on the list (Note: Dr. Blaylock was referring to the first sentence under "Vegetables" below, but he didn't mean that the others he mentioned elsewhere weren't good, also). In general, especially when first starting your conventional therapy, avoid fruits, or at least use just a minimum amount (because of the sugar content -- unless you have an extract supplement without the sugar that you want to take in addition).
Vegetables: Beets, Broccoli (especially broccoli sprouts), Brussels sprouts, Carrots, Cauliflower, Celery, Kale, Spinach, Parsley, Purple cabbage, Tomatoes, Turnip greens. Also, from Dr. Blaylock's cancer newsletter issues: Chinese cabbage, Mustard greens, Collard greens, Squash (summer & winter), Cilantro (best taken with low-mercury chlorella, such as Kyoto brand), Onion, Ginger, Garlic, and Cayenne. Others mentioned by Jerry Brunetti: Cabbage (especially Purple cabbage), sweet potatoes (in moderation – root vegetables are starchy), winter squashes, asparagus, misc. greens such as raddichio, arugula, endive, dandelion, collard greens, mustard greens, beets, red and green peppers, eggplant, tomatoes, artichoke, cilantro. One of my favorite blends is (mostly organic) green onions, fresh parsley, fresh cherry tomatoes, celery, carrots, Brussels sprouts and various other greens, fresh onion, garlic, some cayenne and a jalapeno pepper! Note: do not overdo vegetables from the "nightshade family": tomatoes, most peppers, potatoes (avoid white potatoes totally), paprika, eggplant because they contain a small amount of toxins.
Dr. Blaylock recommends that you use Environne Fruit & Vegetable Wash (www.environne.com) and scrub and rinse them afterwards. He also said that since insecticides penetrate several millimeters into the skins of apples, he advises peeling apples before eating or putting them in the blender.
By blenderizing, you can absorb up to 90% of the nutrients in vegetables and fruits, as opposed to only about 10% for people who chew their food an average amount, and about 20-30% for people who chew their food very thoroughly. Blenderizing (juicing at low speed to preserve the enzymes, and eating the pulp as well as the juice) raw vegetables and fruits (take concentrated berry extracts instead of eating fruits if you have active cancer because of the high sugar content in fruits) retains the plant enzymes and vitamins. Berries (mostly the skins, which some juices throw away) are also helpful. Organic is higher in nutrients, and safer because it is lower in pesticides. Researchers studied the flavanols quercetin, kaempferol, and myricetin. You'll find quercetin in onions and apples, kaempferol in spinach and cabbage, and myricetin in red onions and berries. Of the three, kaempferol provided the largest amount of risk reduction - 22% - across all participants.

Preventing Cancer Spread (From Dr. Blaylock's newsletters):
It’s been said that to best deal with the enemy, you must know the enemy. That makes good sense. Cancers kill by invading surrounding tissues and spreading throughout the body (metastasis). It is the failure of our body to contain the wayward cancer cells that causes the problem.
One way cancer cells spread is by secreting large amounts of a group of enzymes called metalloproteinases (MMP-2 and MMP-9) that dissolve protein. Studies have shown that women whose tumors secrete large amounts of these enzymes have very aggressive cancers, the highest recurrence rate and a shorter survival. Inhibiting these enzymes dramatically reduces the spread of cancer and improves the patient’s prognosis. Several flavonoids inhibit these enzymes. For example, luteolin (artichoke extract and celery) inhibits MMP-2, and curcumin inhibits MMP-9. Together they reduce this metastasis-promoting enzyme significantly. Vitamin C (as magnesium ascorbate) also lessens the ability of cancer to spread. Also, Rath's Epican Forte (http://www.betterlife.com/prod_home_page.asp?prod_id=14786) (or the generic lower cost) inhibits the enzymes cancer uses to spread.
Studies have shown that a diet high in meats dramatically increases the risk of many types of cancer. There are several reasons for this, besides the carcinogens mentioned above. Iron promotes cancer development as well as the growth and spread of existing cancers. Meats have one of the highest absorbable forms of iron, with about 80 to 90 percent being absorbed. Vegetables, such as spinach and kale, can have high iron levels, but the flavonoids in the vegetables prevent the iron from being absorbed, and may explain why mixing vegetables with meats reduces risk.
Likewise, studies have shown that omega-6 fats strongly promote the growth and spread of tumors and dramatically increase colon cancer, making existing cancer aggressive and metastasizing. These are oils such as corn, canola, safflower, sunflower, peanut, and soybean. Americans generally consume about 50 times more of these oils than are needed for health. Such high levels are strong promoters of cancer. Of the carotenoids, lutein, and zeaxanthans, lowered risk as much as 42 percent. Kale, spinach, and tomatoes are high in these carotenoids. Zinc also lowers risk.
Raw Vegetables vs. Cooked Vegetables (From Dr. Blaylock's newsletters)
There is an ongoing debate among nutritionists as to the value of raw vs. cooked vegetables. I have always favored raw vegetables with a mix of some cooked vegetables. We know that cooking vegetables destroys many of the vitamins and some of the flavonoids and the minerals end up in the cooking water. But a new study found that the ability of vegetables to prevent breast cancer in both pre-menopausal and post-menopausal women depends on how the vegetables are prepared.
A German study compared the incidence of breast cancer in 310 women based on their intake of raw vegetables, vegetable fiber, or total vegetables compared to 353 control women on a regular diet. They found there was a dramatic 49 percent reduction in breast cancer in women who ate plentiful raw vegetables as compared to those who ate small amounts. Eating large amounts of vegetable fiber, not grain fiber, reduced breast cancer incidence 38 percent, and a high intake of total vegetables (mixed raw and cooked) produced a 43 percent reduction.
Cooked vegetables alone did not reduce the incidence of breast cancer. Raw vegetables included green leafy salads, fresh herbs (parsley, watercress, chives, basil, and dill), tomatoes, cucumbers, red and green peppers, carrots, radishes, and cabbage.
I prefer using a wide assortment of blenderized vegetables, such as kale, collard and mustard greens, celery, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Bok Choy, and Chinese lettuce. Blenderizing (juicing at low speed to preserve the enzymes, and eating the pulp as well as the juice) raw vegetables and fruits retains the plant enzymes and vitamins. Blenderizing releases the anti-cancer flavonoids so that each cup of the mix is equal to eating five servings of vegetables.
I have some oatmeal (steel-cut from Whole Foods bulk section, or whole oats) every morning with freshly-ground flaxseed mixed in it, and some extra pure water (for the flaxseed to absorb within a couple of minutes before I eat it -- make sure you push it down into the water right away and eat it soon so it doesn't oxidize). Sometimes I also add some cinnamon and a little stevia for sweetness (safe sweetener).
Eggs:Kroeger's carries Christopher's Eggs; 3-4/wk (1 every other day max) is good. This brand is very high in healthy omega-3 oils. Best hard boiled, not fried (oxidizes the cholesterol in the egg).
I would take Concentrated Flax Hull Lignans in addition to freshly-ground organic flaxseed (for the gum/fiber benefits and some lignans) and Modified Citrus Pectin. Also, I would get a variable-speed Vitamix blender and use specific vegetables (particularly cruciferous) mentioned on my RawFood and main Cancer Protocol pages. I prefer to be able to adjust the dosages and forms of individual components rather than taking something like Cellect. Also, Immune Assist Critical Care is a good blend of medical mushroom extracts, coupled with some thymus stimulating exercises, ProBoost and Thymus extract (main Cancer Protocol page), astragalus extract,
Blaylock's newsletters have some additional information on which supplements and foods are helpful. (Blaylock himself uses a Vitamix blender -- I would definitely get his book in addition to these newsletters, as they are not complete). If you cook with oil, the best oils to use are cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil with tumeric & rosemary powders (you can add some lemon juice and squeeze out an oil-soluble vitamin E capsule, too, if you want) to prevent oxidation, or extra virgin coconut oil. Don't let the oil get hot enough to smoke, and don't sear or brown the food (almost like boiling or steaming the food at low temperature, but in oil).
Avoid seared, grilled, flame-broiled, grilled, toasted, processed and packaged meats and starches.
Avoid nitrates, nitrites, msg, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, "spices", "flavorings" and other names for MSG (avoid processed food). Portobello Mushrooms are very high in MSG.
Meats: Organic chicken, turkey & fish are best meats.
Milk, Dairy: Avoid cow products; if you must have some dairy, a little goat or sheep cheese is okay.
Avoid most vegetable oils, pork, beef, Portobello Mushrooms (very high in MSG).
Avoid Psyllium fiber -- causes colon polyps and cancer.
Avoid using a microwave.
Avoid using teflon, non-stick, aluminum or cast iron pans (glass or stainless steel is better).
It's better to store food (especially food containing fat or oil) in glass containers, not plastic.
DIM has been shown in studies to be quite helpful in cancer by reducing DHT and estrogen. DIM is oil-soluble, so you cannot just take a capsule containing dry powder, or a tablet (bioperine increases absorption somewhat, but I open and mix my curcumin, quercetin and dim capsules into purified fish or EV olive oil. When I had DIM tablets, I put them in some food containing oil (actually, about 1-2 TBS of plain, unsweetened goat yogurt to which I had added quite a bit of EV olive oil and a little Stevia sweetener) and chewed the tablet into the oil and food prior to swallowing.
Bananas -- even unripened ones -- are high in starch, which gets converted to sugar in the body, so I'd avoid fruit if I had active cancer. Dr. Blaylock says with active cancer to eat no fruit, but to take concentrated berry extracts. Avocado is high in mono-unsaturated fat (omega-9), as is olive oil. They are good for you, but I wouldn't say that they are particularly strong against cancer. Pomegranate/ellagic acid extract is much stronger against cancer, as are plenty of enzymes, along with curcumin + quercetin well-mixed in olive or purified fish oil, and Boswellia, and Zyflamend (if not available, see the ingredients for it and try to get them individually.
I wouldn't eat walnuts because they're high in ALA, like flax seed oil, and can cause problems with the prostate in cancer patients because the body often lacks enough of the enzyme to convert ALA to EPA/DHA (fish oil); I take purified (molecularly-distilled) fish oil instead. We add a little water (just enough so that it can be blended and form a thick juice), and a couple tablespoonfuls of Cold-Pressed Extra Virgin olive oil -- not "Virgin olive oil", which is extracted using heat and chemicals after all of the good phytonutrients are extracted into the Extra Virgin oil that the manufacturer is making. See my Metabolic Typing pages for some quick tests to determine your metabolic type and how much fat you need. I'm a protein type, so I need a lot of healthy fats (4 TBS/d EV olive, 1TBS/d EV coconut, 4 capsules/d GLA/Borage, 3TBS/d fish oil, small handful of raw pumpkin seeds (particularly good for prostate), some raw Brazil nuts, (I don't eat almonds any more, since the government's poisoned them here in the U.S. with propylene oxide, a carcinogen, and has permitted manufacturers to still label them as "raw" and not mention the cancer-causing ingredient), some line-caught cannded wild salmon (it costs a lot less than fresh wild salmon -- not "farmed", which is low in omega-3 oils and high in mercury and pesticides!). Besides the olive oil in my juice, I add it to my steel-cut raw oatmeal and other foods (see my "Regimen" on the website).
Because kale, broccoli and Brussels sprouts can contain chemicals that inhibit the thyroid gland in their raw state, I suggest lightly steaming them before blenderizing to neutralize the chemicals (Note: I include a moderate amount of these in my juice in their raw form).
Dr. Elizabeth Jeffery found that heating broccoli to 140 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 minutes maximizes the effectiveness of cruciferous vegetables' cancer-fighting chemicals (PEITC). You can approximate this by lightly steaming your broccoli for three or four minutes until they’re between tough and tender in consistency (this is especially effective with broccoli). You can also do this with other cruciferous veggies, such as watercress, cabbage, winter cress, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kale, cauliflower, kohlrabi, and turnips. I also take Broccoli extract from Swanson, and use a Vitamix with specific fresh vegetables.
I use only raw vegetables in my juice. My Cancer&RawFood page tells what vegetables should be included -- oxalic acid in spinach, chard and beet greens is not really a concern, because I eat a variety of the recommended vegetables, not just large amounts of raw spinach. I'm not sure if you can freeze the specific vegetables that are higher in oxalic acid and cruciferous vegetables, but you needn't freeze all vegetables prior to blenderizing them. You might see: http://growingtaste.com/oxalicacid.shtml for reference amounts of oxalic acid -- but, I don't consider it a problem (unless someone was eating large amounts of the ones highest in oxalic acid and had kidney disease, perhaps). I also take 3 drops of Tri-Quench potassium iodide solution (a concentrated source of iodine) that counteracts the iodine-binding of goitrogen vegetables (cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, bind iodine and make it unavailable to the thyroid, and can cause hypothyroidism if you don't take additional iodine. Dr. Rowen's information above about lightly steaming your cruciferous vegetables prior to blenderizing, in addition to taking the Tri-Quench would probably be the best idea, along with also including a moderate amount of raw cruciferous vegetables in your blenderized juice (Note: all non-cruciferous vegetables should be raw so that the enzymes and phytonutrients aren't destroyed). You might research if freezing the cruciferous vegetables and the vegetables highest in oxalic acid would counteract the side effects as well as lightly steaming them.
I take 3 capsules/day of Dandelion; it helps support the liver and remove toxins.
I don't particularly recommend Acai as additional supplement: it's a "current fad" tropical fruit that is overpriced and overhyped and not as good as pomegranate/ellagic acid extract. Note: pomegranate juice is not a good replacement, because it's high in sugar.
To blend flax seed, I use this grinder: http://www.goldflaxseed.com/site/1411640/product/grd001 Flax seeds are not absorbed if they're not ground (you cannot completely chew them into as small pieces as a grinder can). Note that you need to add water to them & stir, and eat within 15 minutes or the oil in them starts to go rancid.
Is blending worth the effort? Definitely -- it's a crucial part of the cancer protocol! When we chew our food, we get about 10% of the phytonutrients from them; blenderizing (with VitaMix 5000, which is variable-speed) lets you absorb about 90% of the nutrition from them, but you also need to be careful to choose certain vegetables each day, too. Note that we do not blend the vegetables in to a mushy, fine pulp, but rather into a coarse, thick juice eaten with a spoon that needs to be chewed somewhat. We use the variable speed on lower settings, because the surface heat of the blades of a high speed blender destroys the enzymes and damages the phytonutrients. Blenderizing releases the anti-cancer flavonoids and phytonutrients so that each cup of the mix is equal to eating five servings of vegetables -- 2 eight ounce cups equals 12 servings of chewed vegetables.
HSI had an interesting article this month about the benefits of Concentrated Flax Hull Lignans for cancer patients and diabetics; they're from flax seed shells, or hulls, which typically don't make it into the bags of flax seed in the store, but the vast majority of the disease-fighting lignans are in the hull that encases the seed (the same with rice hulls, which are discarded or fed to pigs, although they can heal the sick and elderly...) One tsp of concentrated lignans equals the equivalent of two gallons of flax seed (there are practically no lignans contained in the oil, and the ALA in the oil can accelerate cancer in the many people lacking enough enzyme to convert it to DHA/EPA: (http://www.jonbarron.org/newsletters/02/10-21-2002.php)
They also had some interesting testimonials, one from an 84-year old whose lung cancer was so advanced that he was told that he wouldn't make it three months until Christmas: when one of his doctors found out that he had been treating is cancer with concentrated lignans, she became angry and was convinced that the cancer had spread throughout both lungs and his esophagus. She thought "more aggressive" steps should have been taken. However, a scan showed that the cancer had not spread and was actually reduced to one tiny nodule in his lung. This was after he had been taking the lignans for only six months.
They mention a Canadian studies with breast cancer cells being reduced by 34.2% after only one month of lignans, with 31% of the cancer cells completely killed and the expression of the cancer growth receptor Her2 (c-erB2) decreased by 71%.

Another promising thing from Dr. David William's "Alternatives" newsletter this month is about modified citrus pectin (MCP) in the article "Cancer Declawed (Modified Citrus Pectin)". Instead of Tylenol, nsaids, motrin, aspirin use Apis, Arnica, quercetin, capsaicin/cayenne orally and/or cream (swanson), White Willow Bark (don't use too much or too often as this what aspirin is made from and has to be detoxified by the liver -- but it's better than Tylenol, Ibuprofen, etc.), and acupuncture; helps liver instead of hurting it and relieves pain. She can mix something like DiDa Wan (a Chinese martial arts formula for pain) into the salve but it only relieves part of the pain, not all. Most people have had very good luck with DiDa Wan. You can get this in Chinatown or from just about anyone practicing Chinese medicine. It comes as a malleable wad inside wax or plastic (looks a bit like a small grenade) and it blends in white the salve (with some effort.) What you want to be avoid is allowing any contact of metal with the black salve (because the zinc chloride reacts with metal.) Therefore, use something made of wood. When the salve is applied on a very tender area, it will still hurt but then the pain subsides, often within just a few seconds. Obviously, people have tried "everything." YunnanPaiyao: Do not lose the tiny pill that is usually wadded up in the cotton at the top of the bottle. It can be used internally. The powder can be applied externally or made into a tea for internal consumption. YunnanPaiyao has become controversial. A company claims to have a monopoly and claims that the traditional producer cannot make this medicine any more. I find it confusing and, of course, have no idea whether the new product works. The old one was superb, but it came in a powder with one tiny pill in bottle (often almost invisibly buried in the cotton at the top of the bottle) that can be taken orally in the case of shock, bleeding or hemorrhaging and a powder that can be applied externally (or taken internally with warm water). If YunnanPaiyao is not available, turmeric powder (p181) or cayenne can be used to arrest bleeding. Besides stopping bleeding, turmeric is antiseptic and antitumoral, and can also be taken internally (p143). A User on Ingrid's website: Using both cayenne and tumeric for bleeding of ulcerated tumor. We frequently see MSG hiding behind such innocent-sounding names as hydrolyzed protein, vegetable protein, soy protein isolate, soy protein concentrate, whey protein, and natural flavoring, spices, enzymes, autolyzed yeast extract, stock, broth and carrageenan.
As you can see, people are at great danger from these excitotoxic food additives. Nothing has been done about this problem because it is a multibillion dollar business that involves the makers of the additives as well as all food processors, supermarkets, food warehouses and Wall Street itself.
Food stores and processors spend billions each year, advertising in virtually every media outlet available, including newspapers, TV, radio, magazines, and even scientific journals. They do not want to lose advertising dollars by doing a story on the dangers of one of the most commonly used food additives.
Excitotoxins and Cancer
One of the most interesting aspects of excitotoxin food additives and disease is the connection to cancer growth, invasion, and spread. This was first discovered with malignant brain tumors (glioblastomamultiforma). It was shown that elevated glutamate levels in the vicinity of the tumor caused the tumor to invade the surrounding brain, and consequently result in death much faster. Recent research has discovered that a multitude of cancers, including lung, breast, prostate, colon, and melanoma, contain glutamate receptors. Those with more receptors had a much worse prognosis.16 For example, in a study of people with oral cancers, those with the highest level of glutamate receptors had larger tumors, higher rates of metastasis, and a much poorer prognosis. One of the most horrifying cancers of children is the medulloblastoma. Studies have shown that prognosis is highly dependent on glutamate receptors. Those without protective receptors have the worst type of tumor.
Melanoma is one of the most deadly cancers. Melanomas not only contain glutamate receptors, they also secrete high levels of glutamate. Prognosis is strongly dependent on the presence of these receptors; that is, those with the most glutamate receptors have the worst prognosis. Researchers have found that using drugs to block glutamate receptors dramatically reduces the growth, invasion, and spread of a number of cancers.
These glutamate-blocking drugs also dramatically increase the effectiveness of traditional chemotherapy medications. At the same time, they protect normal cells in the body from chemotherapy toxicity.
The irony is that cancer patients are not being told that foods containing high levels of glutamate make their cancers grow faster and make them more likely to spread. I have examined the diets recommended by cancer nutritionists in a number of large cancer centers and found that most contain large amounts of glutamate. These diets also make the traditional treatments less effective, but very few practicing oncologists are aware of this connection to glutamate.
Glutamate and other excitotoxins can trigger prolonged generation of free radicals and lipid peroxidation throughout the body, which leads to a number of chronic diseases, including obesity. Recent studies have also linked glutamate excess to chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple chemical sensitivity, HIV dementia, glaucoma, macular degeneration, osteoporosis, pulmonary disorders, bladder problems, insomnia, and a number of behavioral problems, including addiction.
It is vital to avoid foods containing excitotoxin additives. Don't be fooled by product labels that claim No MSG, No MSG added, or no added MSG because they may contain MSG. Due to current labeling laws, it may not be listed on the label.
The FDA requires most products to label MSG containing ingredients with their common names. The term monosodium glutamate is reserved for the ingredient that is a 99 percent pure combination of glutamic acid and sodium.
Terms for products on labels that always contain MSG include any protein that is hydrolyzed, autolyzed yeast, calcium caseinate, glutamate, glutamic acid, gelatin, hydrolyzed soy protein, monosodium glutamate, monopotassium glutamate, sodium caseinate, textured protein, yeast nutrient, yeast extract, and yeast food.
If hydrolyzed soy protein is used in flavorings, it does not need to be mentioned on the label if the manufacturer claims it is not being used for flavoring.
When broth, bouillon, and stock are used as ingredients in other products, manufacturers do not have to disclose their MSG-containing components.

The not so new game is to label hydrolyzed proteins as pea protein, whey protein, corn protein, etc. If a pea, for example, were whole, it would be identified as a pea. Calling an ingredient pea protein indicates that the pea has been hydrolyzed, at least in part, and that processed free glutamic acid (MSG) is present. Relatively new to the list are wheat protein and soy protein.
Disodium guanylate and disodiuminosinate are expensive food additives that work synergistically with inexpensive MSG. Their use suggests that the product has MSG in it. They would probably not be used as food additives if there were no MSG present.
MSG reactions have been reported to soaps, shampoos, hair conditioners, and cosmetics, where MSG is hidden in ingredients that include the words "hydrolyzed," "amino acids," and "protein."
Low fat and no fat milk products often include milk solids that contain MSG.Low fat and no fat versions of ice cream and cheese may not be as obvious as yogurt, milk, cream, cream cheese, cottage cheese, etc., but they are not an exception.
Protein powders contain glutamic acid, which, invariably, would be precessed free glutamic acid (MSG).Glutamic acid is not always named on labels of protein powders.
Drinks, candy, and chewing gum are potential sources of hidden MSG and of aspartame and neotame. According to the manufacturer, Varivax–Merck chicken pox vaccine (Varicella Virus Live), contains L-monosodium glutamate and hydrolyzed gelatin both of which contain processed free glutamic acid (MSG) which causes brain lesions in young laboratory animals, and causes endocrine disturbances like OBESITY and REPRODUCTIVE disorders later in life.It would appear that most, if not all, live virus vaccines contain MSG.
Reactions to MSG are dose related, i.e., some people react to even very small amounts. MSG-induced reactions may occur immediately after ingestion or after as much as 48 hours.

Reading through that list frustrates me. How can we ever really know what's in that processed food. As for me, I choose to avoid all processed food, especially if it has any of those ingredients in the label. I have often wondered why an ingredient list specifically delineates certain spices (like garlic, oregano, etc.) and then generically lists "spices". Now we know that may be a way to hide MSG in the food.
I thought you might like to know how hydrolyzed vegetable protein is made.
From Excitotoxins: Hydrolyzed vegetable protein - made from vegetables high in glutamate. "Extraction (Hydrolysis) involves boiling them in a vat of acid, neutralizing with caustic soda and then collecting the brown sludge which is dried. This processes produces a brown powder high in three know excitotoxins - glutamate, aspartate and cysteic acid which the body converts to cysteine. Additional MSG may be added to this brown powder. Also adding particular amino acids will give it a beefy taste useful in barbeque sauces and fast foods. Certain nutrients can stimulate the spread and growth of cancer.
While beneficial in cancer treatment, particular nutrients can actually make things worse. For example, methionine — an amino acid that supplies the body with vital sulfur and is thought to be an effective detoxifier — has also been shown to stimulate the growth and spread of a number of cancers, including breast cancer. This is because methionine plays a major role in DNA synthesis, a process vital to rapidly dividing cancer cells.
Of greatest concern is the recent finding that glutamate is a powerful stimulant of cancer growth and invasion. Follow-up studies have confirmed this. In fact, drugs that block glutamate were proven to significantly slow the growth of cancers and remarkably enhance the effectiveness of cancer chemotherapy agents. Our national obsession with soy is ludicrous when you realize that soybeans have one of the highest glutamate levels in the plant kingdom. Mushrooms, especially portobello mushrooms, also have high levels. The one way to avoid glutamate food additives is to eat only freshly prepared foods.
Iron is another cancer “fertilizer.” A number of studies have shown that people with elevated iron levels have higher risks of developing cancer. They also have a higher mortality when they do. The explanation is that iron is essential for cell division — and cancer cells are constantly dividing like wildfire.
An ever-growing amount of produce, fruits, and fruit juices are flowing into the United States from Mexico and points south.
The reason the United States needs to import large quantities of such foods can only be attributed to a quest for greater profits by major companies, such as Tyson Foods, Archer Daniels Midland, and Cargill.
There are several problems with these imported foods.
First, a number of farms use human waste as fertilizer, which ends up on the produce. This includes deadly E. coli germs and hepatitis viruses. For example, we have the incident with Mexicangrown onions several years ago, which sickened thousands.
Second, these countries use a number of herbicides and pesticides that have been banned by our regulatory agencies because they are dangerous carcinogens or nervous system toxins. Finally, the water standards in many of these countries are substandard according to American laws, and this can result in heavily contaminated foods and drinks.
Studies have shown that only 1 percent of the $60 billion of foods imported into this country every year are examined by the FDA.
Because the foods are rapidly perishable, there is no time to carefully evaluate them for safety. FDA Commissioner David Kessler admitted to Congress that the food safety system was broken. He also stated that the only way Americans could be assured of safe food was to grow it themselves. We are exposed to a great number of pesticides and herbicides that are unsafe and can damage human health, even by foods grown within our own borders.
Most Americans are not aware that the regulatory agencies do not adequately test substances used on food crops. In fact, as many as two dozen pesticide residues have been detected on commonly sold vegetables.
In addition, government protection agencies rarely test the effects of pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides when they are used in combination. Incredibly, some chemicals have no toxicity when used alone but are very toxic when combined with others.
Here are some steps you can take to reduce your risk of being poisoned from your food:
• To be safe, you should consider growing your own vegetables and fruits. They can be grown in your yard or in hydroponic gardens indoors. Using hydroponics would allow you to grow produce in the winter. Likewise, natural insect control is vital, using insects such as ladybugs or praying mantids. You can also use other biological control systems.
• Another alternative is to buy locally grown foods. Talk to local farmers and ask about pesticide and herbicide use. Organic farms are popping up all over the place, and have been growing at a rate of 15 percent a year with no end in sight.
• As for meats, there are a number of companies that supply organically fed and free-range meats. But don’t expect even organic meats to automatically free you from the fear of mad cow disease. Unfortunately, the government prevents cattle ranches from testing their cattle for mad cow disease. The Agriculture Department fears widespread testing could lead to false positives. I know of one company that was told to cease and desist by the USDA, even though they were using the most sophisticated testing system in the world.
• Washing vegetables and fruits is also critical. To properly wash your vegetables, fill a two-gallon pot with purified water (filtered) and add two caps of vegetable wash, such as Fit Fruit & Vegetable Wash (or www.environne.com). When washing leafy vegetables like cabbage or lettuce, separate theleaves and wash each leaf separately. Then rinse it thoroughly and dry in a salad spinner. Place in a locking food storage bag, squeeze out the air, and store in the refrigerator. Hard fruits and vegetables, such as bell peppers and cucumbers, need to be washed and scrubbed with a vegetable brush. Fruits, such as apples and pears, should be peeled.
• When buying organic produce, make sure that it looks healthy. Plants with spots and bruises are not safe to eat. Sick plants infected with molds, viruses, and bacteria secrete powerful toxic substances to protect themselves, and they are very toxic to people.
• Avoid injected meats and poultry. You may have noticed that most whole birds and many hams have a carefully-worded label that says that they were injected with either gluten, natural flavors, or hydrolyzed protein extracts. In essence, this is a glutamate mixture much like MSG. And like MSG, it is toxic to your body, especially the brain. Percentages vary from 6 percent to as high as 15 percent. It is now almost impossible to find whole birds that are not injected, but some do exist. You might want to search the Internet for suppliers.
• Wash your poultry well. It is also important to wash whole birds before you cook them. Many are covered in chemicals and bacteria contamination. Just hold the bird under the water and scrub the skin with a vegetable brush (don’t use the same one you scrub vegetables with). After you are finished, hold the brush under the hot water for a minute. All foods should be thoroughly washed before cooking.
• Cook all meats completely through, even steaks. Most animals, especially cattle and chickens, are infected with carcinogenic viruses and there is compelling evidence that humans can develop cancer from these viruses. Several studies have shown that slaughterhouse workers and those who butcher meat have significantly higher rates of lymphomas and leukemias than the general population. These are the same cancers found in cattle and chickens.
Proper Food Preparation Is Essential
Remove the pesticide and herbicide residues from your fruits and vegetables. Carefully cleanse all produce in a vegetable wash. Several brands are available. I use a product called Environne Fruit & Vegetable Wash which can be found at www.environne.com. When rinsing produce, always use fluoride-free water, since the fluoride will bind to your food. Some produce (peppers, squash, cucumbers, etc.) is coated with a wax that has been permeated by pesticides and must be scrubbed with a vegetable brush. Avoid the skin on apples, as poisons penetrate several millimeters into the peel. I have never seen a cancer prevention study in which washed vegetables were used, so you can see how most studies are misleading.
Exercise — but Smartly
To get the most out of your exercise routine, exercise regularly but not aerobically.
Aerobic exercises dramatically increase free-radical generation that can lead to numerous diseases including neurodegenerative disorders. Several studies have shown moderate exercise to be protective against Alzheimer’s dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases.
It is also important to exercise your brain. Reading, memorizing lists of facts, engaging in intellectual conversation and other intellectual pursuits has been shown to be protective. Neuroscientists call it “use it or lose it.” ---

The Concept of a Cancer Diet
I remember reading the detailed diary of a person who was trying to cure his own cancer with alternative treatments. I was puzzled why his treatments weren't working until I came across an entry several months into his treatment plan. He basically stated (after several months of alternative treatments): "I decided to stop smoking." What is wrong with this picture? What is wrong is that he thought he could treat his own cancer by popping pills. There is far more to fighting cancer with alternative treatments than popping pills.
Understand this carefully, taking any alternative cancer treatment is like putting gasoline in your car - you are on your way to killing cancer cells, etc. But having a bad diet, while you are on a cancer treatment, is like putting water in that same gasoline tank!!
Many people have cured their cancer using nothing but a massive change in their diet, and a bad diet during a cancer treatment has destroyed many alternative cancer treatments!! Something as simple as adding lunch meat or hot dogs (nitrates), chips, toast, toasted cereal, or french fries (acrylamides) to your foods may destroy an entire cancer treatment!!
THE CANCER DIET IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS THE CANCER TREATMENT. IF THE CANCER DIET IS NOT, IN AND OF ITSELF, TREATING THE CANCER, THEN IT IS INTERFERING WITH THE CANCER TREATMENT!!!
Another thing that must be understood is that the logic a person must use on a cancer treatment diet is different than the logic they are accustomed to using in dealing with orthodox medicine. With alternative treatments for cancer, what you don't eat is just as important as what you are allowed to eat.
Most people who get cancer get it because of the things they have eaten (and smoked)! The wrong foods created an internal terrain which allowed the body to be filled with fungus (e.g. tobacco leaves are filled with fungus, as are peanuts, to name but two of many such substances commonly consumed), such that when a carcinogenic substance reacted with the body, the internal terrain could not deal with the carcinogenic substance and the person got cancer. In fact, many scientific studies have proven that diet alone, meaning the foods that were eaten, caused cancer. Thus, by default, if you want to reverse your cancer, you must reverse your diet to create a strong inner terrain.
A cancer diet severely restricts what you can eat. By default, if it is not specifically allowed to be eaten in the treatment plan, don't eat it!!
Another key fact is that many people crave certain foods. This may be because of habit or it may be because of a food allergy. People crave foods they are allergic to. I have known this fact for 30 years. Thus, switching from the diet that caused your cancer to a diet that is needed to cure your cancer may involve the stopping of eating foods the person is allergic to (i.e. they crave). This compounds the problem and means even more effort is needed to stick to the diet. Understanding What a Cancer Diet Is
With regards to a cancer treatment, every food that we eat or drink can be categorized into several different categories:
1) Foods that feed and strengthen the cancer cells and/or the microbes in the cancer cells and body. Examples would be: refined sugar, refined flour, soda pop, dairy products, etc.
2) Foods that cause cancer (e.g. trans fatty acids [margarine, French fries and virtually every other processed food you buy], aspartame [Diet Coke, NutraSweet, Equal, etc.], MSG, polyunsaturated oils [e.g. corn oil], etc.)
3) Foods that directly interfere with alternative treatments for cancer (e.g. chlorine, fluoride, alcohol, coffee, etc.)
4) Foods that occupy and distract the immunity system from focusing on killing the cancer cells (e.g. beef, turkey, etc.)
5) Foods that contain nutrients that kill the cancer cells, stop the spread of cancer, or in some other way help treat the cancer (e.g. purple grapes with seeds and skin, red raspberries with seeds (ellagic acid), strawberries with seeds, broccoli, cauliflower, several herbs, carrots, pineapples, almonds, etc.)
In addition there are things like cooking vegetables: the cooking destroys the enzymes in the vegetables and make them far less digestible and far less effective in treating cancer. Pasteurizing any food or drink also does this.
Ideally, during a cancer treatment, if foods are allowed on a particular diet, 100% of everything you eat should be in the category of "Foods that contain nutrients that kill the cancer cells, stop the spread of cancer, or in some other way help treat the cancer." Whenever you eat a food that is not in that category, you are interfering with your cancer treatment! This is why so many cancer diets are very high in certain raw vegetables and certain raw fruits.
Some foods, however, are in more than one category. For example, grapes feed glucose to cancer cells, plus they contain nutrients that kill cancer cells. So should you take grapes? Generally, no. (Miracle Reds, Berry Green and BerryVin are good supplements that give you the benefits of fruit without the harm of a lot of sugar)
Blending in a Vitamix 5000 certain raw vegetables and raw fruits is also good in some cases (but not all cases, especially when the seeds are important) because the vegetables and fruits are more easily digested (translation: more nutrients get to the cancer cells). However, when you juice (instead of blenderize) you throw away a lot of nutrients.
But also understand that not all vegetables and fruits are equal at treating cancer. Some vegetables do not contribute significantly to treating cancer and some fruits do not contribute significantly to treating cancer (at least not that we know of at the current time). On the other hand, some vegetables are very potent cancer killers, as are some fruits (but extracts with little or no sugar are better).
Chlorine, Fluoride and Other Toxic Chemicals
Avoid all chlorine in your diet. This includes avoiding foods made with tap water. Chlorine destroys many phytonutrients and other nutrients, thus the damage done to the food during processing, if chlorine is used, is permanent and cannot be reversed. This means, for example, not drinking soda pop or any other drinks that have been made by mixing tap water with something else. You should not buy bottled grape juice because during processing, the chlorine in the tap water destroyed many phytonutrients. The damage cannot be reversed.
As a general rule, ALL vegetables should be organic, if possible (Note: the EWG chart PDF that I link to on my main cancer protocol page shows which are highest in pesticides; if cost is a factor, at a minimum, those that are the highest should be organic). Green vegetables, including grasses (generally juiced) and sprouts, MUST be the foundation of a good cancer diet. The fiber, enzymes, chlorophyll, minerals, and many nutrients are necessary for your cancer diet. Even if you could figure out a cancer diet without eating green vegetables (including the grasses), you should not do it. These are REQUIRED to be the foundation of your cancer diet!!
Just as there are some things you must not eat, there are some things you MUST eat.
Blending vegetables and grasses will help get more nutrients into the body (you'll absorb 95% of the nutrients as opposed to only 15-20% if you happen to be one of those few who chew their food extremely well). However, some whole vegetables should be eaten in order to get the fiber. Fiber is critical to a cancer treatment.
As with all juices, if you make the juice from the actual foods, the juice should be drunk immediately after they are prepared. In cases where many small doses of a fresh vegetable juice are needed to be taken (e.g. to avoid diarrhea), the juice can be refrigerated during the day.
Essentially, you should have organic, fresh salads/vegetables/juiced grasses/sprouts for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Many of the other foods that are allowed on this diet should be mixed in with the salad, except for the vegetable juices.
A list of such vegetables taken from the Young book:
"broccoli [*], asparagus [*], beets [*-moderation], cabbage [*], carrots [*-moderation], cauliflower [*], celery, cucumbers, egg-plant, green and yellow squash [moderation], green beans and peas (fresh), spinach, mustard greens, collards, kale [*], lettuce, okra, parsley[*], scallions, radishes, Swiss chard, watercress, sea vegetables, such as nori, wakame and niziki, wheat grass[*-usually juiced], barley grass[*-usually taken as a supplement], turnips[*], and sprouted grains[*] or beans[*]. Also eat lots of garlic[*], onion[*], and cayenne pepper/hot peppers if they agree with you." The [*] symbol means this is a known anti-cancer food and these foods should be favored. It would be a really good idea to juice all of the vegetables available that have the [*] symbol above!!
"A word about sprouts: Even sprouts purchased in health food stores have been shown to have very dangerous bacteria in them. Wash them very well, but it is even better to grow them yourself.
Nuts & Seeds
In general, raw shelled pumpkin seeds, and whole macadamia nuts are allowed on a cancer diet. Cashews and peanuts are strictly prohibited. Other nuts should be used very sparingly. Peanuts (which are not really nuts) and cashews both have too much fungus and should not be used at all. Even the acceptable nuts should be used sparingly.
By a very wide margin, the best foods in the world are wheatgrass juice, barley grass juice and a few other grasses. Only a small number of vegetables can even come close to these superfoods. However, most people are not going to sprout grass (search the Internet for the phrase: "wheatgrass kits" if you want to do it). Thus, many vendors make a variety of qualities of parsley powder, kale powder, barley powder or powder made from a wide variety of vegetables, herbs, and grasses. Hopefully you will pick the high quality products. Such foods are absolutely required for a cancer treatment, mostly due to chlorophyll, but for other reasons as well. (Note: I use Now organic Barley and/or Wheat grass powder).
However, in addition to such supplements, you will hopefully be able to juice fresh wheatgrass or barley grass for yourself.
Legumes, except peanuts, are allowed to be eaten by cancer patients, but only in moderation (due to their containing some starch); the dark-colored ones (e.g., black beans, kidney beans) have the most phytonutrients.
Whole grains can be used only when a cancer patient is fighting dangerous weight loss. If the weight loss is uncontrolled, they should consider a cachexia treatment plan, based on Hydrazine Sulphate (see the sample treatment plans). Yeast, which every cancer patient has throughout their body, converts complex carbohydrates into simple carbohydrates (sugars), so even whole grains should be avoided when possible. In any case, avoid commercially stored grains and potatoes.
Another reason to avoid even whole grains is that over the decades the soil has become acidic and because of the soil many whole grains have more fungus than they did many decades ago. Corn and white rice (because of the way they are stored) are grains that should be totally avoided. Even Brown and wild rices should be eaten only in moderation. Steel-cut oats or raw oats (you can pre-soak them overnight in the refrigerator in pure water to reduce cooking time) are also good if only eaten in strict moderation. Note: I eat a piece or two of Ezekiel bread (sprouted bread) for lunch; 4 tablespoons of oatmeal mixed with 2 TBS of freshly ground flaxseed and water for the flaxseed to absorb, for breakfast; sometimes a small amount of wild or brown rice with supper -- other times just vegetables plus blended vegetable juice, free-range chicken breast or wild-caught fish, and plenty of healthy oils (extra virgin cold-pressed olive oil (4-6 TBS/day), Borage/Evening Primrose oil (2AM, 2PM), molecularly-distilled fish oil 4 TBS/day (NSI – (http://www.vitacost.com/NSI-Liquid-Purified-Fish-Oil-Omega-3-EPA-DHA) 16.9oz, $19.99. Note that I have replaced other sources of calories with the healthy oils, such as carbs, so I won't gain weight.)
No nitrates (lunch meats, hot dogs, etc. -- they're even adding it to turkey breast and chicken! Dietz and Watson Chicken Breast is still MSG-free with no nitrates, but almost all deli food is harmful.
Meat, Fish, Fowl, Eggs, Dairy Products
All beef, and all pork should be avoided during a cancer treatment. There are many reasons for these restrictions.
Avoid all dairy products from cows (see Blaylock's book), including butter, all cow cheeses and all malts. Free range eggs in moderation are okay.
If a person must have milk, the only acceptable variety is unprocessed goat's milk, "from organically grown and grazing goats."
Sweeteners, the Bad and the Good
ALL man-made sweeteners (e.g. aspartame - NutraSweet, Equal) and fat substitutes should also be avoided. These items are most often associated with brain and liver cancer, but everyone should avoid them. This is one of many reasons soda pops are out of the question. Soda pops are also acidic.
There is only one acceptable sweetener in a cancer diet - Stevia, which is an herb.
Sugar and Refined Grains
You should absolutely avoid eating refined sugar and refined grains and anything else refined. These things not only feed the fungus and yeast in your body, they also feed the cancer cells.
In addition, refined sugar and other simple sugars also interfere with your immunity system. These substances also interfere with getting Vitamin C and oxygen into the cancer cells. Sugar also depletes the body of key minerals and other nutrients because of its acidity. It is not the acidity that directly destroys the minerals; the acidity causes the body to use the minerals to regulate the pH level in the body. The same is true of all acidic foods.
The chain reaction caused in the body by acidic foods (due to the body's attempts to keep the blood at a level pH) is the cause, or a major contributing factor, to almost all chronic diseases, including cancer. It would take an entire book to describe how the body keeps its pH normal, and the ramifications of these processes. Avoid honey, also.
Fruits, Dried Fruits and Fruit Juices
The only fruits that are allowed on this diet, without restrictions, are the following: unsweetened lime, unsweetened lemon, and avocados. That is it. Lemons are actually a required part of any cancer treatment because of their beneficial effect on the liver and because they get oxygen into the body. Lemon juice and lime juice should be taken primarily just before bedtime. (Berry extracts are good)
Mushrooms (Fungi), Seaweed and other Saccharides
The good news about mushrooms is that they do contain polysaccharides, which are essential to the immunity system. Mushroom supplements such as beta glucan are certainly acceptable to a cancer diet.
"Polysaccharides from mushrooms do not attack cancer cells directly, but produce their antitumor effects by activating different immune responses in the host. The antitumor action of polysaccharides requires an intact T-cell component; their activity is mediated through a thymus-dependent immune mechanism."
Seaweed is also high in polysaccharides, but the FDA crushed one of the superb seaweed products from Tonga because they claimed there was no "scientific evidence" for seaweed. Apparently, those in the FDA have not heard about the Nobel Prize. Actually, the FDA has not only tried to crush polysaccharides, but also the more potent Acemannanglyconutrient sugars, which are required by the immunity system to be able to communicate.

"Bad Fats and Oils
Other foods you should absolutely avoid are trans fats, meaning trans fatty acids or partially hydrogenated oils. Trans fatty acids may be one of the major causes of cancer. They become part of the cell's wall (replacing cholesterol) and make the cell wall rigid or sticky and can make the cell anaerobic (i.e. the first step to becoming cancerous) because large oxygen clusters cannot get into the cells.
Like refined salt, these fats also destroy the electrical charge of red blood cells, causing them to "stick" together. When this happens, among other things, the red blood cells do not get to many cancer cells, meaning the cancer cells get far less oxygen (if any), meaning they thrive because they are anaerobic.
Another bad food for cancer patients is polyunsaturated oils. Polyunsaturated oils (e.g. corn oils sold in supermarkets everywhere) promote the growth of small blood vessels (by promoting the production of "bad" prostaglandins). This is bad for cancer because it allows tumors to grow new blood vessels. However, these small blood vessels are good for preventing strokes. Thus, while on a cancer diet avoid polyunsaturated oils.
In short, avoid all heated oils.
Herbs and Spices
All herbs and spices are acceptable, except black pepper and other highly acidic spices. Several herbs, such as Sheep Sorrel and Black Walnut, are known to be strong anti-cancer foods. Turmeric, which contains curcumin, is a spice that is a potent anti-cancer food.
As with all foods, the storage of herbs can cause them to be high in fungus. Also, herbs should generally not be used on a non-stop basis, unless specifically instructed to take them daily. Generally, it is best to take a periodic break from herbs.
Junk Foods, Condiments and Other Comments
You can forget about eating at a restaurant, big or small, formal or informal, unless it has a menu specifically for organic, raw foods.
Condiments are absolutely forbidden. One of the most acidic foods on earth is black pepper (black pepper is a major cause of acid reflux disease).
Basically, any "refined" or processed food that contains sugar, refined salt, aspartame, MSG, trans-fatty acids, coloring, other additives, refined flour, etc. etc. should be avoided. Even the cooking of food kills critical enzymes needed for digestion.
There is a trend in the food industry of making "no trans fats" foods. This does not mean these are healthy foods. They are processed.
While it is true that cooking does release some vitamins, by a very wide margin, overall it is better to eat food raw, if it can be safely eaten raw, since all enzymes are destroyed at 140 degrees F.
Need I even mention that it’s important to stop smoking (no matter what kind of cancer you have), because smoking puts more than 100 carcinogens in your body? Tobacco is also very high in sugar, fungi and yeasts. Part of this is due to they way tobacco leaves are processed.
Also, stopping from drinking alcohol is critical (which is a "primary mycotoxin"), which interferes with ALL treatment plans. Alcohol has been shown to greatly increase the incidence of childhood leukemia.
Avoid caffeine (except when it is used as an enema), because caffeine restricts the blood vessels, meaning less oxygen gets to the cancer cells. It is also acid-forming and mucoid-forming.
Let us use some common sense in our choices.
Some Special Listed Foods
Peanuts are perhaps the number one food that should be avoided because they are so high in fungus. Foods that have little resistance to invaders, when they are growing, are frequently high in fungus.
Corn, rice (because of the way it is stored) and potatoes, and any foods with corn, rice or potatoes, should be avoided, also because of fungus and the way they are stored.
Cashews are another food high in fungus.
Avoid processed apple juice for reasons beyond the scope of this article.
Avoid oranges, tangerines, and dried fruits, for a variety of reasons.
Do not microwave any foods during a cancer diet.
Water and exercise
Every cancer patient should drink as much natural water (i.e. natural spring water or natural artesian water, processed with ozone, or distilled with a WaterWise distiller) as they can, up to a gallon a day. The many benefits of water are beyond the scope of this article, but rest assured it is important.
Also, a cancer patient should get as much exercise as reasonable. Exercise pumps the lymph system and helps get toxins out of the body and stimulates the T-cells from the Thymus to circulate out of the Thymus gland into the bloodstream where they aid the immune system in fighting cancer. Even if a person can do no more than lift 3 pound weights for 10 minutes while sitting in a chair, it will help.
As Dr. Young emphasizes, it is also good to sweat in order to release toxins.
Warning: Very Important Safety Comment
Use nattozyme and other natural blood thinners (fish oil, gingko, ginger root extract) if you have a tendency to clot when eating high amounts of cabbage or other green leafy vegetables day after day; also take sufficient iodine (Tri-Quench from Tahoma Labs 3drops/d) if you're eating lots of healthy cruciferous vegetables (goitrogens, which bind iodine) every day in order to avoid hypothyroidism. Kelp doesn't contain enough iodine for this purpose.
According to Dr. Max Gerson, and others, even before the symptoms of cancer appear, the liver is damaged. As the cancer progresses, the damage to the liver also progresses.
The liver is the major organ in the body which deals with toxins. A person on an alternative cancer treatment releases a lot of toxins into the blood stream which end up in the liver. Because of this, the liver must be "detoxified" or "cleansed."
There are some alternative treatments that contain liver detoxification elements in the treatment itself. The grape cure, Essiac Tea, barleygreens, and others, cleanse the liver along with the treatment.
There are also a slew of herbs which "stimulate" or "detoxify" the liver. At the head of this class, as far as I know, is the herb "Milk Thistle."
Several alternative cancer treatments specifically deal with the liver by using enemas. Coffee enemas are by far the most common and are part of the Kelley metabolic plan, the Gerson diet, the Hulda Clark treatment, and others. "[Coffee enemas are] said to open the bile duct of the liver so that it quickly sends material into the colon for elimination." Occasionally, lemon enemas are also used.
The bottom line is that in designing a treatment plan, the care of cleaning the liver is critical. If the toxins in the liver build up and are not removed, it can cause the death of the liver, which means the death of the patient.
"The liver (among its many other functions) is the major organ of detoxification. Anything we can do to ease our toxic burden makes the liver’s job easier – including eating less, drinking more water, reducing our intake of toxins, exercising more, eating more fibre, and so on. There are also a number of herbs that help the liver with its detoxification tasks. These include dandelion root, yellow dock, burdock, chickweed and barberry – which are more effective when taken in combination than singly."
Another thing that will ease the burden on the liver is the lymph system. The lymph system also helps remove toxins from the blood, but the lymph system does not have a "pump," such as the circulatory system has (the "pump" of the circulatory system is the heart). The lymph system is only pumped by exercise.
"Like the cardiovascular system, the lymphatic system is made up of channels or vessels, valves and filters (nodes). Unlike the bloodstream system, however, there is no pump like the heart. Instead, the lymphatic fluid is forced through the system by the action of the muscles and breathing."(http://www.cbass.com/lymph.htm)
The lymphatic system is critical to the immunity system, to the treatment of cancer and to taking a burden off of the liver. Many cancer patients, for a variety of reasons, are in no condition to go for long walks, jog, or do other types of exercise. However, the good news is that the arm muscles are just as good, and perhaps better, at pumping the lymphatic system as are the legs. Thus, lifting hand weights can accomplish much in helping the lymphatic system.
However, prior to cleansing the liver of toxins, the colon must be cleansed so that the toxins can be dumped into the colon!! This means that at the beginning of any alternative cancer treatment, there must be a colon cleanse.
“It is important to make sure that the colon is in good shape before stimulating the healing of the liver. If toxins cannot be excreted, the liver may store them, causing harm.”
There are many different natural treatments for cancer where their effectiveness is completely a function of the quality of the product. For example, there are many Noni Juice manufacturers. Some of their products are terrific and others are total junk. There are many Essiac Tea vendors, some of their products are excellent, and some are total junk. There are many vitamin manufacturers, and some of their products are good and some are total junk. Graviola is the same way, much of it is junk, but the tree has great nutrients. Pau d' Arco is very difficult to process correctly and I am not sure any vendor does it right. And so on.
No matter what you buy, you must be aware that the formula might be excellent, but the quality of the product may be poor. This is one reason why a product from one vendor may work wonders for one person, but the same product from a different vendor may not work at all for others.
It is difficult to evaluate the quality of natural products. One reason is that natural products take longer to become effective than the orthodox pills that treat symptoms instead of causes. This means it takes longer to evaluate.
These are some of the reasons that I recommend using multiple treatments at the same time. One or two of the products may be inferior quality, but other products may make up for the slack.
But this approach is another reason it is difficult to evaluate natural products. You don't know which of the products are working and which are not.
In some cases, the product is only manufactured by one vendor, such as when there is a patent or a brand name. However, even in this case the selling companies, or shipping companies, may allow the product to be exposed to high temperatures which might destroy much of the value of the product.
Only when you make the product yourself, and buy the ingredients locally, can you be certain of its quality. That is why it is always advisable that at least one or two key treatments in your protocol are purchased locally at a grocery store or health food store, and put together at your home.
Having said all of this, there are some vendor products that have a long history of superb quality and effectiveness. This is where "word of mouth" is important and testimonials on the internet are important. (Note: standardized, and made by a well-known company, such as Jarrow, Now, Swanson, NSI, is best)
All in all, beware. If your treatment is not providing significant improvement in your condition, it may be time to change vendors or change products.
This is another reason I say to never stop doing your homework. You never know when you will find some key piece of information that will direct you to make a significant change.
The Distressing Symptoms of a Severe Change in Diet
When you go on a natural treatment for cancer, such as the grape cure, hydrogen peroxide, raw food diet (i.e. carrot-based vegetable juice), etc. you can expect some strong reactions from the body. As Johanna Brandt put it:
"The grape is, as far as I know, the most powerful nature solvent of some chemical deposits, and at the same time the most drastic eliminator. Because of its extraordinary properties, the avenues of excretion become superbly active under a proper grape diet." (page 102)
Other foods and treatments can also yield these results. Here are samples of things I have run into:
“[After starting an alternative treatment program] I had chemotherapy coming out the pores of my skin, even though it had been months since I had any. I had to take showers several times a day to wash this stuff off because it would burn my skin as it came out. It smelled putrid. It was just awful, the toxic stuff that was coming out of me.”
"Something else I noticed was that any time she had a bowel movement (which became quite frequent after the start of the diet) it was so foul smelling, almost like she was excreting rotten flesh!"
"He is doing well at taking everything as he is supposed to. My sister said that she noticed a foul odor 'like it was coming out his pores' last Sunday. She said it smelled horrible and was nauseating and unbearable."
And if you are on a colon flush, it gets worse: "He reported lumps of foul smelling substances that looked like 'rotten hamburger' flushing out of his colon, his urine was strong and dark, and he had occasional headaches."
These symptoms, plus diarrhea, constipation, etc. can all result from a massive change in diet or the treatment itself. You don't need poisons to deal with bugs. Start by making yourself an unappealing target.
Making human flesh unappetizing to mosquitoes, ticks, flies, and fleas is an age-old preoccupation. The earliest insect repellents included smoke, mud, and various plant substances. Our contemporary contribution is DEET (N, N-diethyl-meta-toluamide), a powerful insecticide found in over 400 repellents. DEET can peel paint, damage rayon and spandex, and melt plastic. Up to 56 percent of DEET applied to the skin enters the bloodstream, and reactions to it include skin rashes, lethargy, muscle spasms, nausea, and irritability. An extreme reaction can cause seizures and even death. So it's hardly worth using DEET to deter insects unless you're someplace with high rates of insect-borne disease or you experience severe allergic reactions to bites and stings.
There are natural alternatives to DEET, made primarily from plant essential oils, that can protect you in less threatening circumstances. Although "there is no natural repellent as effective as DEET," says Eve McClure, executive vice-president of Quantum, a natural repellent manufacturer in Eugene, Oregon, "natural repellents do help ward off mosquitoes, black flies, gnats, and fleas, and they may provide some protection against ticks."
Ticks, the carriers of Lyme disease, are among the most worrisome pests. If you are traveling in an area known for Lyme disease (according to the Centers for Disease Control, this includes the Atlantic states and Northern California), contact the American Lyme Disease Foundation at (800) 876-5963 for preventive advice.
Reactions: From Mild to Fatal
Although most people experience only temporary pain and swelling after a bee or wasp sting, some individuals are hypersensitive and can experience a potentially fatal anaphylactic reaction. The symptoms of anaphylaxis include hives, agitation, difficulty in breathing, nausea, dizziness, and a swollen tongue or face. Without prompt medical treatment, this can be fatal. Although anyone can have an anaphylactic reaction, the people most at risk are those with a history of allergic reactions to stings -- hives, wheezing, or a previous episode of anaphylactic shock.
People who know they are at risk should carry an emergency kit with injectable epinephrine, which is available by prescription. Home care can include drinking slightly salty water(1/2 tsp. per quart, at 4 oz. per hour), Vitamin B-5 at large doses briefly (2 grams 3X a day, for 3-4 days), Licorice capsules or tea at 1-2 cps./1 cup tea, 2 or 3 X a day.
You don't have to be in the tropics or in an area at high risk for insect-borne disease to take the following steps. Hordes of insects your own backyard can lead you to seek extra protection. Debra Nuzzi-St. Claire, an herbalist in Boulder, Colorado, has these suggestions (see "Making Your Own Natural Insect Repellent," below, for essential oil combination):
Spray clothing and bedding (including the mosquito netting of your tent, if you're camping) with an alcohol-base repellent.
Pour several drops of the combined pure essential oils onto a candle.
Place a few drops on cloth or paper strips and hang them around the room, especially by doors and windows.
Add the base oil to shampoos and liquid soaps.
Most natural insect repellents are made with an essential oil distilled from citronella, a tall, aromatic grass indigenous to Southern Asia. Its pungent, lemony fragrance is pleasant to most people but objectionable to mosquitoes. Other aromatic essential oils commonly found in natural insect repellents include cedarwood, lemongrass, eucalyptus, peppermint, pennyroyal, lavender, and bergamot.
These are safe when applied to the skin, but should not be taken internally without the advice of a professional. Pennyroyal, in particular, is highly toxic if ingested.
Essential oil repellents are available in spray or oil form. According to Eve McClure, restrictions by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have made it difficult for consumers to identify natural repellents by packaging alone. Since the EPA classifies all repellents as insecticides, it requires expensive testing, which includes experiments on live animals. Because most natural repellent manufacturers are unwilling -- or financially unable -- to comply with EPA guidelines, they cannot promote their products as natural insect repellents. "We had to remove the bug from our label and change our name from 'Buzz Away' to 'Zzz Away,' " says McClure (see "Making Your Own Natural Insect Repellent").
After the Bite
If mosquitoes, flies, and fleas feast on you in spite of your efforts, Nuzzi-St. Claire recommends applying undiluted tea tree oil to the bites. Tea tree oil has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties and is usually non-irritating. Test a small area of skin before applying the oil liberally. If the essential oil irritates your skin, wash it off with soap and water and dilute the tea tree oil in five parts of jojoba or almond oil before reapplying. Testing for sensitivity is a good practice when applying any essential oil for the first time.
Sharol Tilgner, a naturopathic physician and natural first-aid expert in Portland, Oregon, recommends applying a drop of peppermint essential oil to insect bites. "Anything with menthol will increase the circulation in the area and dissipate the anticoagulant that the mosquito has injected into you," she says. Other topical treatments for reducing itching and inflammation include cold compresses, lavender essential oil, and calamine lotion. Dr. Thomas S. Lee, an Arizona naturopathic physician, likes pure lavender oil rubbed into the bite ASAP. "The Chinese patent medicine White Flower Oil is a clean mentholated formula that works well, too."
Well-equipped and well-informed, you can take those restorative strolls and hikes with greater confidence. Carl Mitchell of the Centers for Disease Control in Fort Collins, Colorado says, "People definitely shouldn't avoid outdoor activities for fear of bug bites and stings. Just take a few precautions."
Stings: The Finer Points
Although bees, wasps, hornets, and yellow jackets generally won't go out of their way to attack, they can be extremely aggressive if you disturb their nests or bother them while they're feeding. They're attracted by perfumes and scented bodycare products, as well as by sweet foods such as ice cream, fruit juices, and watermelon. Bright-colored clothing can also make you a target.
If you do get stung, the following tips can help minimize the problems:
Bumblebees, wasps, yellow jackets, and hornets can attack repeatedly, so if you get stung, get out of the area immediately. If you're stung by a yellow jacket, avoid swatting at it. Crushing the venom sac releases a chemical that incites its nest-mates to attack. Honeybees can sting only once, but the stinger and venom sac they leave in your skin pump venom for two to three minutes. Remove them immediately, being careful not to squeeze the venom sac. The safest way to do this is to scrape them out with a credit card or the dull edge of a knife. If the stinger remains behind after you've scraped away the venom sac, remove it gently with tweezers.
Making Your Own Natural Insect Repellent
Herbalist Debra Nuzzi-St. Claire suggests combining the following essential oils to make a natural insect repellent:

1/4 ounce lavender oil
1/8 ounce pennyroyal oil

Toss out those expensive chemical compounds and clean your home a safer, natural way.
For many of us, the thought of housecleaning conjures up the image of a huge array of cleaning products -- products with brand names and mysterious chemical ingredients. The average person has been so bombarded with advertisements for these products that he or she actually believes cleaning is impossible without them. We know of one woman who bought $38.32 worth of cleaning items alone on one trip to the supermarket. And for many of us, these expensive products end up lying half-empty, moldering in kitchen cabinets. But cleaning can be done without brand-name products, which are not only expensive but also can be dangerous your health.
Of the two million chemicals now in existence, only a few hundred have been tested adequately for their potential for causing cancer, liver or kidney damage, birth defects, and so on. Even when there is a known danger, many chemicals remain in use. Spot removers, for instance, contain either chlorinated hydrocarbons or petroleum distillates, and can be lethal even in small quantities.
Some 35,000 serious accidents occur each year with bleaches, dyes, waxes, polishes, and assorted cleaning compounds. More than a thousand children in the United States die each year from accidental poisoning, often from chemical compounds. Some swallow electric dishwasher detergent (the container may look like a cereal box), some drink furniture polish that resembles cherry soda. But these are the acute cases.
A clue to long-run effects of these chemicals is found in the recent study showing that housewives have a cancer rate double that of women working outside the home. Our houses contain many of the chemicals known to be cancer hazards in industry -- and many of these we use for cleaning.
However, we can reduce the number of dangerous chemicals in the home to a very few -- perhaps bleach, washing soda, and ammonia. We can keep these under lock and key, and use them sparingly. As for all the rest, the o-phenylphenols and isopropanols, we don't need them.
Here are some "grandmother-tested" ways to clean without dangerous chemicals, and save money, too.
Scouring powder: Combine nine parts whiting (from a hardware store) with one part soap granules. This mixture won't scratch surfaces as commercial products do, and it omits the unnecessary chlorine, which could accidentally combine with other chemicals -- like ammonia -- to produce dangerous chlorine gas.
Brass and copper cleaner: Vinegar and salt paste.
Window cleaner: 4 tablespoons ammonia, 2 tablespoons vinegar, and 1 quart water, followed by lots of elbow grease with crumpled old newspapers for a special sparkle.
Drain cleaner: First, try a plunger. Then try 1/2 cup washing soda followed by 2 cups boiling water. For a stronger treatment, combine a handful of baking soda with 1/2 cup vinegar. Close the drain and let it sit, then flush with water. Do this regularly to prevent buildup. (Washing soda is an alkali much less caustic than lye, but it should be kept locked up. It is dangerous.)
Rug cleaner: Get the spill scooped or blotted up fast! Dip a small brush in cold water and work out the spot. For a grease spot, sprinkle a generous amount of dry baking soda or dry cornstarch on the spot. Let it stand for an hour or so, then vacuum. If the grease remains, try the Magic Spray Cleaner below, and a stiff brush.
Rug shampoo mix: Mix 1/4 cup mild detergent or soap, with 1 pint of warm water and 2 tablespoons vinegar. Whip into a stiff foam. First, vacuum the rug thoroughly. Apply the foam and scrub. Let dry, then vacuum again.
Magic spray cleaner (for surfaces other than varnish, aluminum or asphalt tile): 1/4 cup ammonia, 1/8 cup vinegar, 1 tablespoon baking soda, and 1 quart water. Pour into glass or plastic bottle, screw on a hand squirter top, and enjoy.
Furniture polish: Use paste wax or mineral oil, which are much less toxic than petroleum distillates like "lemon oil," which isn't from lemons.
Spot remover: For fabrics that don't take to bleach, apply ammonia diluted with an equal amount of water. Put paper towels underneath to blot. If the ammonia odor clings, apply a table-salt solution. (A last resort for old stains is a dab of vinegar.)
Oven cleaner: Sprinkle spills generously with salt while the oven is still hot. The burned deposit should scrape off with no trouble when the oven cools. For thorough cleaning, set an open shallow dish of full-strength ammonia inside the cold oven. Close the door and let it stand overnight. The ammonia gas from the solution is absorbed by the grease, which ends up like soap. Do not use this method on aluminum.
Deodorizers: Use baking soda here, there, and everywhere -- down the drain, on baby spit-up, in diaper pails, refrigerators, cat litter and the kitchen sponge. It's easy and simple.
But now that you've cleaned the house, you're hungry. You eat, and then you have all those dirty dishes, rags, and the laundry, too. What to do about them? It's time to look at the great detergent/soap controversy.
Dishes done by hand come clean quite easily with soap powder. Greasy or burned residues can be soaked with soapy water and a dash of ammonia. Dish detergents aren't at all necessary unless you use an electric dishwasher, and then they are extremely dangerous. They are so caustic that a mouthful could be fatal to a small child.
Some folks think that electric dishwashers are necessary to reduce the number of germs on their dishes, but there are other ways to get them germ-free. The best approach is to wash and rinse them well in hot water, then let them dry by standing, covered with a towel. Do not dry them by hand.
It's clothes-washing that really sparks the soap-detergent controversy. Soaps don't dissolve as easily as detergents. And in hard water, soap combines with the water's calcium grains to make a hard "curd" on clothes and tub. But soaps can do as well as detergents, even in cold water, according to a study published in Consumer Research Magazine.
What's needed is to make sure the soap dissolves before you put the clothes in -- stirring helps. If you have hard water, add some washing soda. It will precipitate the calcium out of the water to prevent curd formation. (Other water-softening powders rely on huge quantities of phosphate.)
Remember that washing soda is dangerous, so keep it away from children. Bleach helps clean, and borax will "sweeten" the wash, but these may not be needed most of the time, and they, too, are toxic chemicals.
But why bother with soap? Are detergents really that bad? Actually, we know little of the possible harmful effects of detergent chemicals, either on people or on the natural environment. We do know that enzymes added to some detergents to "fight stains" can induce allergies. Detergents can cause asthma and skin irritation, and they have been shown to kill sperm in mice. They irritate if inhaled, and can be fatal if swallowed.
Besides, detergents generally cost 1/3 more per wash load than soap powder. The profit margin in detergents has been at least 25 percent greater than that on soaps, according to one government study.
Another point is that detergents usually rely on some phosphates to carry off dirt. Phosphates pollute our waterways, destroying lakes and rivers. Some detergents rely on other compounds, but often we do not know the long-term effects of these. NTA (nitrilotriacetic acid), for instance, was touted as the replacement for phosphates until it was found to cause birth defects and cancer.
One further argument against detergents is that they are made from petroleum, a nonrenewable resource. In contrast, soap is made from lye and fats or oils that are part of an ever-renewing natural cycle of life.
That's what cleaning is about, really -- renewing our environment so that life goes on happily and healthily. What use is a clean house, if it pollutes our bodies and the world around us? Cleaning with simple, natural ingredients can be a testimony of our dedication to an integrated, organic way of life.
"Out, Out, Damned Spot!"
I remember Lady Macbeth washing her hands endlessly, trying to get the bloodstains off. She was guilty. Spots and stains tend to bring on guilt feelings.
A little historical light on the subject may help. A friend of mine did a study on the American home as it was portrayed in magazines since the year 1900. She found that every new invention, like flush toilets or vacuum cleaners, inaugurated a new -- higher -- standard of cleanliness.
For instance, an advertisement for vacuum cleaners urged women to "put an end to dusty Friday," the day when they swept the floor and the rugs for the weekend. The standard of cleanliness was once-a-week sweeping. After the arrival of the vacuum, a higher standard developed -- cleaning floors and rugs two or three times a week.
The flush toilet, when invented, became not simply a way to avoid cold, wet journeys to the outhouse, but a new object that must be scrubbed, deodorized, and disinfected.
Detergents, invented in the 1930s, led to standards of clothes cleanliness in which even a tiny spot leads us to throw the whole garment in the wash, rather than sponging the spot and wearing the article one more day.
Cleanliness became next to Godliness -- a sign that people had "made it" into the middle class and could afford the new appliances and chemicals.
There was, however, a strange side-effect for women. The housewife's work may have been easier, but the hours were longer. A time study of rural urban housewives in 1930 showed almost no differences in hours -- 61.0 on the farm, 63.2 in towns and cities. By 1947, farm women still worked a 60-hour week, but women in cities (usually the owners of more labor-saving devices) were logging close to 80 hours per week.
The clue to this mystery comes from the Ladies Home Journal: American homes were becoming "more satisfying," and housekeeping standards were much higher.
So when we consider that spot or stain, we should remember that cleanliness is only one of many values which change from time to time. Is it more important to have perfectly clean clothes, or to end the chemical contamination of our waterways brought on by phosphates, enzymes, brighteners, and cancer-causing carbon tetrachloride?
If art gum erasers, soap-and-water, and elbow grease don't get all the smudges off the walls, is it better to leave them for the next paint job or to run for an aerosol-foam wall cleaner with expensive packaging, high advertising costs, and several chemicals that have not been tested for their long-term effect on humans? (My experience is that the commercial cleaners will not get all the smudges off anyway.)
Most of the time we may find ourselves saying that a little dirt never hurt anyone. It's a sign of life and growth. We may find ourselves buying the clothes and furnishings that accept soap and water, nature's own remedies for dirt. After all, nobody ever expected a garden to be dirt-free, and in cleaning our homes we are truly tending the garden of our lives.

Our product testing department tried about 50 formulas for grease removers, furniture polishes, drain cleaners, window cleaners, and other common household cleansers that you can make yourself. Many of the homemade versions do cost less, some only half as much as commercial counterparts.
Suzanne Ebbert, Product Testing Director, cautions that you shouldn't count on homemade formulas to cut your cleaning costs in half, though you could shave a couple of dollars off the grocery bill every month or so.
What Suzanne found most attractive about mixing your own cleaners was the control over ingredients. Some commercial preparations don't tell you what's in them. Some contain only common chemicals like bleach and ammonia, whose health hazards are known.
But the labels on others show weird, unfamiliar ingredients. If you find you're using one of the mystery blends, you can mix a substitute yourself -- and know what's in it.
Don't assume that all homemade formulas are harmless, Suzanne warns. Ammonia is just as poisonous, and smells just as bad, regardless of whether you pour it into the bucket or a chemical company pours it into the factory vat. Still, you can mix harmless cleaners from ingredients like baking soda and water.
How effective are homemade cleaners? Suzanne found several formulas that worked as well as the most expensive and effective commercial preparations. Many of the formulas cleaned as well as the cheapest commercial counterparts but meant more scrubbing than the most effective ones.
But Suzanne points out that there is a place for these milder formulas. The mild cleansers work perfectly well for light cleaning jobs, and if you're willing to scrub, they'll work on tougher jobs. As far as household chemicals go, too often we're tempted to use the big guns to swat flies.
Here's a selection of some of the better cleaning formulas Suzanne found. More appear in The Natural Formula Book for Home and Yard, edited by Dan Wallace (Rodale Press, 1982).
Old-Fashioned Glass and Window Cleaner
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1/2 cup household ammonia
1/2 cup white vinegar
1 gallon warm water
Mix the ingredients in a bucket and use to scrub windows. Try not to clean glass the sun is shining on because it will dry too fast and streak.
Rating: Very good. The best commercial preparations left the window only a little shinier. Even though the cornstarch makes the mixture slightly gritty, it didn't scratch the glass. Poisonous.
Hazards: Ammonia is poisonous, so keep the mixture away from children and arrange good ventilation. Wear gloves, because it's a heavy-duty cleaner and rough on the hands.
Cost: About 20 cents a gallon (not including water)
Vinegar Window Cleaner
1/2 cup white vinegar
1 gallon warm water
Just mix and scrub.
Rating: Very good. We'd been warned that plain water could do as well as a vinegar solution, but our subjective impression was that the vinegar made it a lot easier to get rid of smudges. In theory, vinegar is supposed to remove hard-water spots.
Hazards: May be hard on your hands, but safe enough to drink.
Cost: About 7 cents a gallon (not including water)
1 tablespoon flour
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon white vinegar
Combine salt and flour in small bowl and stir until blended. Add the vinegar and mix into a thick paste. Smear on the paste with a damp sponge or cloth and rub gently. Let the polish dry for about an hour. Rinse well with warm water and buff dry with a soft cloth.
Rating: Good. Does the job but you need to scrub more than you would with a commercial cleaner.
Hazards: Safe enough to eat, and it's not gritty enough to scratch the metal.
Uses: Suitable for brass, bronze, copper and pewter. Not for silver, silver plate, and jewelry.
Cost: Less than a penny for about 3 tablespoons of paste (not including water)
1/4 cup baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
1 cup household ammonia
1/2 cup white vinegar
1 gallon warm water
Mix ingredients and store in tightly capped container.
Rating: Excellent. Performed as well as top-of-the-line commercial products.
Uses: Many. Tile and linoleum floors, formica countertops, appliances, etc.
Hazards: Read about ammonia above.
Cost: About 40 cents a gallon (not including water)
2 tablespoons or 1/8 cup liquid bleach
1 quart cold water
Mix in a scrub bucket. Moisten an old cloth with the solution and wipe onto surface. Let stand about 2 minutes and rinse well.
Rating: Very good. In the ballpark with commercial cleaners, but few name-brand cleaners got rid of smudges with less scrubbing.
Hazards: Bleach is poisonous, so keep it away from children. It will bleach anything it touches, so use only on colorfast items. Check the solution first on a hidden spot.
Uses: Same as above.
Cost: Less than a penny a gallon (not including water)
1½ cup household ammonia
1 gallon warm water
Mix in a pail and use to scrub.
Rating: Very good. A few of the best commercial cleaners outperformed it.
Hazards: Ammonia is poisonous and its fumes sting the eyes and throat. Wear gloves. Don't mix with chlorine bleach because the combination produces poisonous gases called chloramines.
Uses: Same as above.
Cost: About 8 cents a gallon (not including water)
2 ounces borax
1 teaspoon ammonia
2 quarts water
Dissolve the borax and ammonia in a bucketful of water. Scrub a really dirty wall from the bottom up. If you scrub from the top down, the dirty water will run down over the dry, soiled wall leaving hard-to-remove streaks. Oddly enough, it won't stain wet, clean walls. For textured walls, old socks are good scrubbers because they won't tear off in little pieces as easily as a sponge might. To keep water from dribbling down your arm, fasten an old washcloth around your wrist with a rubber band.
Uses: For painted walls, not wallpaper.
Rating: Very good. A few commercial preparations required less scrubbing.
Note and a Caution: Users have reported that this solution works well to remove wallpaper, if that's what you desire. If not, see Uses above.
Hazards: See ammonia above. Don't let children eat the borax either.
Cost: About 6 cents for 2 quarts (not including water)

Your colon is approximately 6 feet long and serves primarily to dehydrate liquid waste material.
Your colon begins at the lower right hand corner of your abdomen, where it is called your cecum. Attached to your cecum is a twisted, worm-shaped tube called your appendix.
From your cecum, your colon travels up the right side of your abdomen, where it is called your ascending colon. When it reaches your lower right ribs (just below your liver), it turns to travel across your abdomen to just below your lower left ribs; here, it's called your transverse colon.
Just below your lower left ribs, it makes another turn and travels down the left side of your abdomen -- this portion is called your descending colon.
Your colon then makes one last turn toward the middle of your abdomen, forming an "S" shaped segment that is called your sigmoid colon.
Your sigmoid colon empties waste materials into your rectum, which is like a storage pouch that holds onto your feces until contractions in your large intestine stimulate a bowel movement.
In order to understand how to keep your colorectal region clean and healthy, let's go over a few key details on how your large intestine works.
Large Intestine Physiology
Movement of Waste Material
After you eat a substantial meal, your stomach expands enough to trigger a reflex that causes a contractile wave (called a peristaltic wave) to travel through your small intestine and push any liquid waste material (chyme) that is sitting in the last part of your small intestine into your large intestine.
Once enough liquid waste material accumulates in your cecum (the first part of your large intestine), the waste material begins to move up your ascending colon.
Movement of waste material through your colon is facilitated by something called "haustral churning". Your colon is divided along its length into small pouches called haustra. When a haustrum is filled with substantial waste material, its muscular walls contract and push the waste material into the next haustrum. The contractile reflex that allows haustral churning is regulated by your enteric nervous system, which is a division of your autonomic nervous system.
On average, your colon experiences anywhere from about 3 to 12 moderate waves of contractions every minute. After every substantial meal, your colon experiences a much larger contractile wave, called "mass peristalsis". Mass peristalsis serves to push waste materials from your transverse colon all the way to your rectum. In most people, mass peristalsis occurs about three times a day.
Water and Nutrient Absorption
The mucosal lining of your large intestine is lined with tiny pits that open into long, tube-like intestinal glands; these glands are lined with specialized cells that absorb water, and other specialized cells (goblet cells) that release mucous into your large intestine to lubricate your stools and to protect the lining of your large intestine against acidic substances and noxious gases.
The specialized cells that absorb water from your waste materials are responsible for about 10 percent of the water that you absorb from the foods and beverages that you ingest; the remaining 90 percent is absorbed by cells that line your small intestine.
This 10 percent of water absorption in your large intestine amounts to anywhere between a pint and a quart of water in most people, and represents a significant portion of your body's daily intake of water. As water is absorbed from the waste material in your colon, so are some nutrients, mainly minerals like sodium and chloride.
It takes anywhere between 3 to 10 hours for your large intestine to absorb enough water from waste material to turn it into solid or partially solid stools. Your stools consist mainly of water, mucous, fiber, old cells from your intestinal lining, millions of microorganisms, and small amounts of inorganic salts.
When your rectal pouch is distended with enough feces to trigger a contractile reflex, your feces are pushed out through your anus. When you consciously contract your abdominal wall, your diaphragm moves downward and helps open up muscles that line your anal sphincter.
Your rectum is lined with three horizontal folds, called your rectal valves; these valves are what prevent stools from passing through your anal sphincter when you pass gas.
If you choose not to release stools when you experience an urge to do so, your reflex contractions may stop, in which case you likely won't have a significant bowel movement until the next mass peristalsis occurs.
Diarrhea and Constipation Explained
When waste material travels through your digestive tract too quickly for sufficient water absorption to occur, your stools will be runny and more frequent than normal.
Three main causes of diarrhea are:
* Undesirable microorganisms
* Food intolerances (like lactose intolerance)
In the first two cases listed above, it makes sense that your body would want things to move quickly through your system; your body doesn't want to spend time digesting foods that it cannot properly extract nutrients from or that are laced with disease-causing microbes.
Stress can cause transit time to shorten by messing with your enteric nervous system; please recall that your enteric nervous system controls the reflex contractions that mark "haustral churning". Your enteric nervous system is a part of your autonomic nervous system, and your autonomic nervous system regulates your physiological responses to emotional and physical stress.
When waste material travels through your colon more slowly than it should, so much water is sucked out of your waste material that your stools become hard.
Five main causes of constipation are:
* Eating sporadically, or eating meals that are too small to illicit mass peristalsis.
* Not going when you feel an urge to go
* Lack of a healthy intestinal lining that is capable of producing enough mucous to properly lubricate your stools (vitamin A deficiency is a potential cause of this situation)
* Insufficient intake of water, water-rich foods, and/or fiber-rich foods.
Natural Ways to Keep Your Colorectal Region Clean and Healthy
Please note: A number of the following ways to keep your colon and rectum healthy are tied to preventing chronic constipation.
Chronic constipation is the single greatest cause of having an unclean and unhealthy colorectal region because over time, constipation causes your bowel walls to face excessive pressure -- pressure that is created by you straining to go and by your colon walls creating stronger contractions to help eliminate hard stools.
Excessive pressure on your colon walls can cause little pouches called diverticuli to form. Sometimes, small bits of waste material can get lodged in diverticuli.

Her body was found in her home shortly after she took part in a water-drinking contest that was sponsored by a local radio show. Entitled "Hold Your Wee For A Wii," the contest promoters promised a free Wii video game machine to the contestant who drank the most water without urinating.
It is estimated that the woman who died drank approximately 2 gallons of water during the contest. When she and other contestants complained of discomfort and showed visible signs of distress, they were laughed at by the promoters and even heckled.
This tragic news story highlights the importance of understanding why drinking too much water can be dangerous to your health.
Whenever you disregard your sense of thirst and strive to ingest several glasses of water a day just because you have been told that doing so is good for your health, you actually put unnecessary strain on your body in two major ways:
Ingesting more water than you need can increase your total blood volume. And since your blood volume exists within a closed system - your blood circulatory system - needlessly increasing your blood volume on a regular basis puts unnecessary burden on your heart and blood vessels. Your kidneys must work overtime to filter excess water out of your blood circulatory system. Your kidneys are not the equivalent of a pair of plumbing pipes whereby the more water you flush through your kidneys, the cleaner they become; rather, the filtration system that exists in your kidneys is composed in part by a series of specialized capillary beds called glomeruli. Your glomeruli can get damaged by unnecessary wear and tear over time, and drowning your system with large amounts of water is one of many potential causes of said damage. Putting unnecessary burden on your cardiovascular system and your kidneys by ingesting unnecessary water is a subtle process. If you force large amounts of water into your system over a short period of time, your kidneys will struggle to eliminate enough water from your system to keep the overall amount at a safe level.
As your blood circulatory system becomes diluted with excess water, the concentration of electrolytes in your blood will drop relative to the concentration of electrolytes in your cells. In an effort to maintain an equal balance of electrolytes between your blood and your cells, water will seep into your cells from your blood, causing your cells to swell.
If this swelling occurs in your brain, the bones that make up your skull hardly budge. The result is an increase in intracranial pressure i.e. your brain gets squeezed. Depending on how much water your drink in a short period of time, you could experience a wide variety of symptoms, ranging from a mild headache to impaired breathing. And as occurred recently in the tragic water-drinking contest, it is quite possible to die if you drink enough water in a short enough period of time.
This information is particularly important for parents to pass on to their children. Foolish water-drinking contests are not uncommon among high school and university students, especially while playing cards.
So how much water should you drink to best support your health?
The answer to this question depends on your unique circumstances, including your diet, exercise habits, and environment.
If you eat plenty of foods that are naturally rich in water, such as vegetables, fruits, and cooked legumes and whole grains, you may not need to drink very much water at all. If you do not use much or any salt and other seasonings, your need for drinking water goes down even further.
Conversely, if you do not eat a lot of plant foods and/or you add substantial salt and spices to your meals, you may need to drink several glasses of water every day.
Regardless of what your diet looks like, if you sweat on a regular basis because of exercise or a warm climate, you will need to supply your body with more water (through food and/or liquids) than someone who does not sweat regularly.
Ultimately, the best guidance I can provide on this issue is to follow your sense of thirst. Some people believe that thirst is not a reliable indicator of how much water you need, since many people suffer with symptoms related to dehydration and don't seem to feel a need to drink water on a regular basis. My experience has been that most people who are chronically dehydrated have learned to ignore a parched mouth. If you ask such people if they are thirsty and would like a piece of fruit or a glass of water, they will almost always realize that they are indeed thirsty.
Some people suggest observing the color of your urine as a way of looking out for dehydration. The idea is that clear urine indicates that you are well hydrated, while yellow urine indicates that you need more water in your system. While this advice is somewhat useful, it is important to remember that some chemicals (like synthetic vitamins) and heavily pigmented foods (like red beets) can add substantial color to your urine. Thumbs down for synthetic vitamins, and thumbs up for red beets and other richly colored vegetables and fruits.
The main idea that I wish to share through this article is to beware of mindlessly drinking several glasses of water per day without considering your diet, exercise habits, climate, and sense of thirst.
