Statin and many other cholesterol-lowering drugs, such as Mevacor and Lipitor, elevate liver enzymes -- they did so in me to the point that they said I had beginning liver cancer. (That's why I flushed them down the toilet and did other things to bring my cholesterol under control! See my Cholesterol page for more info.)
A note about buying supplements: if you buy "standardized" supplements (e.g., standardized for 24% silymarin, or etc.), you'll get more consistent results than if you simply buy whole herbs that aren't standardized (these are "pot-luck" -- some have enough or too much of the active ingredients in them, and others have very little or none). Also, this is why you want to buy reliable brands. You might consider using Froogle to shop so that you can compare prices quickly: http://froogle.google.com (Remember to take shipping into consideration, as some vendors charge more for shipping than for the product).
These are supplements that I take for liver health:
Silymarin Milk Thistle Extract. Improves bile solubility, lowers ALT & AST Liver Enzymes (www.swansonvitamins.com)
L-Taurine 1000mg Jarrow(helps prevent gallstones by improving bile solubility). (www.swansonvitamins.com)
TMG (also known as Trimethylglycine, or Betaine) for liver & heart Protection, works with Protease (an enzyme) & Bile - www.swansonvitamins.com
Artichoke Extract. This stimulates gall bladder to secrete bile, so be careful if you have gallstones or it could rupture gallbladder [stimulates bile production, which helps digestion and gets rid of liver toxins, increases HDL (good cholesterol), protects LDL cholesterol from oxidation, increases glutathione]
Dandelion Root for liver support (increases bile, which helps digestion and gets rid of liver toxins). (www.swansonvitamins.com)
A good fish oil is Now brand lemon-flavored Fish Oil (molecularly distilled and manufactured in Norway under strict quality control standards. It is screened for the absence of potentially harmful levels of contaminants (i.e. mercury, heavy metals, PCB's, dioxins, and other contaminants), has vitamin E and rosemary as preservative) (see http://www.nowfoods.com/?action=itemdetail&item_id=41371)
The only kinds of fish that have appreciable omega-3 oil content are sardines, salmon, herring, tuna and mackerel (in decreasing order); these need to be packed in water (or olive oil) to get any benefit from them, not an omega-6 oil like soybean/cottonseed/corn/safflower/sunflower/etc. Other kinds of fish, such as cod, trout, etc. have only about 1/10th to 1/20th as much.
