For Heart Attacks, take L-Carnitine within 24 hours to reduce damage (p34 Speed Healing Ad Booklet by Dr. Mark Stengler); Magnesium (via IV best – Dr. Whitaker); Alpha Lipoic Acid; CoQ10; Clot supplements and enzymes above.

Stroke risk factors: high blood pressure, heart disease, high cholesterol (over 240), obesity, diabetes, atrial fibrillation, smoking, excessive alcohol use, sleep apnea, bad diet.

Prevention: increase consumption of potassium-rich fruits and vegetables and eat more low-mercury and low-PCB (wild-caught from clean waters) fish, avoid red and processed meats, refined grains, sweets and desserts, and limit whole grains. High intakes of vegetables, legumes, fish and moderate intakes of fruits and whole grains are best. High dosages of vitamin C (as magnesium ascorbate), magnesium (citrate is a good form), fish oil (molecularly-distilled to remove cancer-causing PCB’s and mercury), reasonable doses of folic acid and vitamins B6 and B12 (sublingual B12 best, because we lose the ability to absorb this from our digestive tract as we become middle-aged, or if we take antacids). Also, take Nattokinase daily – it removes excess fibrin from the blood, lowering inflammation and improving circulation as well as reducing risk of harmful blood clots, according to Dr. Julian Whitaker’s Mar2005 Health & Healing newsletter ( 800-539-8219 www.drwhitaker.com).

Although some neuronal death is irreversible if you’ve already had a stroke, HBOT (Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy) can “wake up” other cells in the immediate area (called “ischemic penumbra) by jolting them with massive amounts of pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber. HBOT also stimulates angiogenesis, or growth of new blood vessels. A treatment course of 30 or more sessions results in remarkable improvements in blood flow in the brain that can be seen on SPECT scans. For more information on HBOT, visit hbomedtoday.com. A Full Clot-Prevention Program

Dear Dr. Wright,
My wife recently underwent surgery to repair her mitral valve. The valve was not repairable and it was replaced with a mechanical valve. That was two weeks ago yesterday. The hospital put her on Coumadin to reduce blood clotting. We are still trying to get her Coumadin level right as indicated by INR tests. Coumadin inhibits vitamin action, but with long-term side effects. I am encouraged by Dr.Wright’s suggested alternative of using cod liver oil. I hope my wife can gradually move off of Coumadin and on to cod liver oil.

Can this be done safely with INR tests as a measure? Can we look forward to a day when she is only using cod liver oil, and INR tests indicate that her clotting times are within an acceptable range?
—M.W.G.,Huntsville, Alabama

Dr.Wright: While it is very possible to both prevent and guard against blood clots without the use of Coumadin® or other patent medications, please make sure to be working with a physician skilled and knowledgeable in natural and nutritional medicine if you decide to do so!

Did you know that it’s possible to take so much fish oil that if you cut yourself you won’t stop bleeding? That should be a clue to the fact that fish oil can be an effective anti-coagulant, but even if you’re bleeding nearly to death it won’t be reflected by the INR test, which tests only for the very specific effect of Coumadin® on the “clotting cascade.”

If your doctor feels better if he or she can use a specific test, have him(or her) look for a local laboratory which uses a platelet aggregometer, lab equipment which measures how long it takes platelets to start forming clumps, an aspect of the clotting process not affected by Coumadin®, but definitely affected by larger quantities of fish oil. An “extra long” platelet aggregation time indicates inhibition of blood clotting.

For adults, 1½tablespoons of fish oil twice daily is almost always enough to lengthen platelet aggregation time and partially—although not completely— inhibit blood clotting. (If you try it yourself and then cut yourself even slightly after a few days, you’ll find it takes significantly longer than usual for the bleeding to stop.)However, never take extra fish oil without additional vitamin E in the form of “mixed tocopherols.”

Vitamin E prevents extra fish oil (or any other polyunsaturated oil) from causing lipid peroxidation, oxidative damage to cell membranes. Your best bet is 600 IU of mixed tocopherols twice daily (or three of the 400 IU capsules) with this amount of fish oil.

Yes, this is a lot of fish oil, and can cause burping or belching or, in a few cases, loose bowels. This can almost always be stopped by taking a high lipase digestive enzyme (ask your natural food store, compounding pharmacy, or the Tahoma Dispensary) with the fish oil each time.

More importantly, in the long run, all this omega-3 fatty acid consumption from fish oil, while helpful in protecting against clots, can also cause an imbalance with important omega-6 fatty acids.

This is one of many reasons why it’s important to work with a physician skilled and knowledgeable in natural and nutritional medicine who can help you measure your balance of fatty acids. And yes, to achieve the anti-coagulant effect, your fatty acid test will always show your omega-3 fatty acids higher than the “population normals” which are used as indication of normal ranges. Remember, those “population normals” are for people who are almost never taking that much fish oil as an anti-coagulant tool! To stay in balance at the high levels resulting from taking considerable extra fish oil, it’ll likely be necessary to also take extra omega-6 fatty acids such as GLA (gamma-linolenic acid).

Need extra insurance against too-sticky blood?

For extra anti-clot insurance, I usually recommend adding nattokinase, at least 100millligrams every eight hours, for example at bedtime, on waking (if you sleep approximately eight hours), and once half-way between getting up and going to bed. To be extra careful, four times daily might be even better. Timing is important as nattokinase should be in the bloodstream “round the- clock” to maintain its ability to “eat” early clots whenever they may occur.

Nattokinase is an enzyme originating in microorganisms which have been used in Japan for thousands of years to make a soy cheese, natto. Researchers have determined that nattokinase is absorbed undigested into our bloodstreams, where it literally does nothing at all unless fibrin (the micro-filament protein basis for clots) starts to form anywhere in all the tens of thousands of miles of blood vessels in our bodies.

When fibrin starts to form, nattokinase goes into instant action and digests away the fibrin—and a clot can’t form once its fibrin basis has disappeared. (Although not as relevant here, nattokinase can also dissolve pre-existing clots over a period of days to weeks, depending on how large or extensive the preexisting clot may be.)

Some physicians prefer another absorbable “clot-busting” enzyme derived from earthworms, called lumbrokinase. As “icky” as it sounds, it has no remaining earthworm parts, and is at least as effective as nattokinase. Even though nattokinase and lumbrokinase are available at natural food stores, compounding pharmacies, and the Tahoma Clinic Dispensary, please make sure to work with a physician skilled and knowledgeable in natural and nutritional medicine if your goal is to prevent abnormal blood clotting.
