Free disaster preparedness info -- from Arthur Bradley's Amazon Blog As many of you may know, I am in the process of writing a "how-to" handbook on disaster preparedness. The book is finally coming along! I've completed many of the chapters, including water, shelter, food, protection, and more. The idea is to write a well-researched book that offers practical advice on how to prepare for emergencies and disasters. I've read nearly every book out there on disaster preparedness, and I'm combining all the best advice, along with my own experiences to give the reader what I hope is a handbook of useful information. I have created a website that offers practical advice on how to go about preparing - some of this comes from the intro of my upcoming book. The site will eventually get lots more info, so check back often: www.disasterpreparer.com Survival in a bucket? I am in the process of writing a handbook on disaster preparedness (DP). I've posted a useful list of items to keep in your automobile in a previous post - see below. In this post, I'd like to briefly take a look at the effectiveness of prepackaged DP kits (usually sold in a 5 gallon bucket). If you read their websites, you might come to believe that getting prepared is simply about forking out $99 and finding a shelf on which to store the bucket of goodies. Let's take a look at one such disaster preparedness kit meant for a family of four. 12 Energy bars 12 Water boxes (8 ounces each) 4 Space blankets 1 Pair work gloves 4 Thin plastic ponchos 4 Small packs of tissues 1 Tube tent 4 Lightweight dust masks 50 Water purification tablets 1 Pair disposable medical gloves 1 Solar radio with flashlight 1 Small first aid kit (bandaids, gauze, tweezers, antibiotic cream) 4 Lightsticks 1 GI-style can opener 50 feet of nylon cord Small Swiss Army knife 50 Waterproof matches 5 Emergency candles (5 hours each) 12 Plastic bags Package of toilet chemicals Whistle Roll of duct tape 5 Gallon bucket with optional toilet seat Seems like quite a list! But let's put ourselves in a disaster and see how well we hold up. Example scenario Let's assume that you live on the East Coast (which I do), and a hurricane blows through (which it did shortly after I moved here). Thousands of power poles are taken down, leaving you without electricity for 3 weeks. Gasoline is in very short supply. Supermarkets are unable to stock up. And local water reserves are contaminated due to flooding. The temperature is about 80 degrees during the day and 50 degrees at night. There are bouts of very heavy rainfall. Worst of all, large tree has fallen through the roof of your house. To top things off, there are some scattered reports of looting. Let's test this kit against our fundamental needs: Food - The energy bars will keep you alive a couple days longer than if we had nothing at all, but they certainly won't help the morale of your hungry family used to eating "normal" food. The GI style can opener will open any canned food we have on hand, but it is slow, difficult to use, easy to lose, and won't hold up for long. Water - The purified water will only last your family of four about 6 hours (assuming 1 gal/person/day). After that, you will have to boil the contaminated city water in the hopes that whatever contaminants have gotten into the supply can be nullified. Shelter -- There are no tarps or tools to patch the hole in your roof, so your shelter is slowly being destroyed by the deluge of rain. Light -- The kit's single solar radio/flashlight would be inadequate for a family of four to function in darkness. The five emergency candles would likely only last a single evening. After that, your family would be forced to hunker down as soon as night arrives. Heating/Cooling -- The temperatures are mild enough that you can survive without heating or cooling, although daytime temperatures will make it uncomfortable and increase your need for drinking water. Evening temperatures are likely to be chilly, and you can only hope that we already have adequate blankets on hand to keep everyone warm. Note that space blankets are unsuitable for anything but short term wilderness survival as they are typically small, easily torn, hard to stay wrapped up in, and of questionable benefit over a simple tarp. Air -- There are no dangers to your air supply. Sleep -- Sleeping in our home is still possible for a while, but conditions will quickly become unhealthy because of sanitation issues. Medicine/First Aid -- The first aid supplies in the kit are completely inadequate for anything beyond a scraped knee. If anyone in our family becomes injured or ill (both very possible), we will be in a very serious situation. Communication -- There is nothing in the kit to help contact family or friends, no evacuation plan, no pet supplies, no games or activities to keep children entertained, and no information about emergency services. Financial Security -- The kit does nothing to help your financial security. In particular, there are no home inventory sheets to help itemize your property damage. Hygiene -- The few packages of tissues and the potty bucket are inadequate for your family's personal hygiene. Without an ample supply of water, your family faces risk of disease from inadequate sanitation. The inability to maintain an accepted level of cleanliness will also quickly drive morale down. Transportation -- The kit does not help with transportation issues. You would have no spare gasoline or alternate means of transportation. Protection -- The kit offers nothing in terms of personal protection (save for a small pocket knife). Should looters mistakenly invade your home thinking it empty, you will be at their mercy. The bottom line is that the "bucket survival kit" would fall far short of meeting your post-hurricane needs. Try running the kit against other scenarios (e.g. winter storm, terrorist strike, widespread blackout, etc.). I think you'll find that it does little to improve your chances of survival. My criticism however isn't directed against any company offering such kits. Having a bucket of supplies is better than having nothing at all. And so in one sense I salute them for identifying a very real need. It is however my strong recommendation that you take a much more practical approach to disaster preparedness. Several friends have asked for a list of items to keep in their vehicle. Let me know if you see anything missing. Most Important Items: - A heavyweight canvas bag with shoulder straps (IDF tactical duffel is great) - Warm blanket -- 1 for each person - LED flashlight with fresh batteries (Surefire makes great flashlights) - Bottled water - a few bottles per person - GPS unit and/or maps of area - Jumper cables or Jumpstarter (Jump-n-carry 660 is good) - Empty gas can (1-2 gal) - Siphon - Small tool kit, include a roll of 3M all-weather Duct tape - First aid kit (include sterile gloves, bandages, CPR shield, scissors, SAM splint, ACE bandages, pain killer, etc.) - Cell phone with car charger - Jack, tire iron, spare tire - Leather gloves - A comfortable pair of walking shoes (broken in) - Can of Fix-a-flat - Lifehammer or Res-Q-Me - within reach - Tub of wet wipes - Tow rope - Pen and notepad (Rite in the Rain are good for outdoor use) - Fixed blade knife (Benchmade, Gerber, Ka-Bar, Al Mar, Cold Steel, others) - Triangle reflectors or flares (Defusco reflectors are heavy duty) - Small fire extinguisher (A-B-C types will handle wood, oil/gas, and electrical fires) - A few 12 hour cyalume "chemlights" with neck straps - A little cash, calling card, list of phone numbers - A flash drive with copies of important papers, photos, passports, etc. (write me for a complete list of things to include) In cold weather, consider adding: - Spare clothing - Ice scraper w/brush (get something that is heavy duty) - Folding shovel (Gerber NATO shovel is good) - Kitty litter - Emergency candles in can (Nuwick 120 hour candles are good) - Waterproof matches or grille lighter with firestarter (TinderQuik is good) - Tire chains (as appropriate) Additional Helpful Items: - Poncho or raincoat - Gallon Ziploc bags (for going potty in) - Tarp - Small board for placing a jack on in soft ground - Parachute cord - Energy bars - a couple bars per person - Quart of oil and funnel - Whistle - Compass - Disposable camera (for accident photos) - Aerial signal flares - Nuke Alert (radiation monitor keychain) - Position Locator Beacon (ACR ResQFix or similar) - Gas mask A quick word about disaster preparation... Before you head to the store to "stock up," sit down and give some thought as to what you're preparing against. In the case of an auto kit, you would quickly come up with a list of things like: getting lost, running out of gas, having a flat tire, dead battery, or other auto trouble, becoming stranded in bad weather, having your engine catch fire, getting stuck in a prolonged traffic jam, being trapped by the seat belt in an accident, etc. Once you identify the dangers, you can better prepare yourself. Plus, you won't have a bunch of junk filling your trunk with no idea why it's there. The "Most Important Items" that I pulled together are meant to meet many of the most common roadside disasters. The "Additional Items" could be added when taking long trips or in cases where risk seems higher. After much interest, I have decided to offer an auto disaster preparedness kit based around my list. There are many fools under these mantras. There is really no substitute for taking personal responsibility in every area of our lives, including finance, health and religion. Keep following a leader and you will eventually be in a ditch more like a human grave. We sit on an economic powder keg. Authorities would have us to believe that the system will recover and prosper. There is no system. It is a patched-up paper money monster that has nothing left but confidence. When that falters, she blows! The truth is we have eaten our seed corn! Not only that, we have borrowed from our future. Americans have been sold completely on the idea that lowering interest rates is the ticket to eternal material prosperity. Consequently, the American consumer has already borrowed from next year's consumption. All speculative manias in history have led to financial excesses, overproduction capacities and huge debt. This has led to a vicious downturn and financial busts which in turn has led to recessions or depressions. The very salient point is that none of the financial establishment or public gurus saw the collapse coming now or in the past. The economic situation in the U.S. today is far more dangerous and complex than ever before. We are indeed faced with a fundamentally totally different set of economic, financial, and now, geopolitical conditions than ever before in our economic history. Inflation eventually creates deflation, as so well demonstrated in Japan. Ironically, deflation gives paper money more purchasing power, something governments never intend. Inflation is an increase in the volume of money and credit relative to available goods. Deflation is a contraction in the volume of money relative to available goods. Simply put, deflation develops as a result of excessive debt built up during boom times. Almost no one expects deflation before it starts. And almost no one knows why deflation comes like a bolt out of the blue. Here is the reason. The social mood reverses from euphoria to loss of confidence periodically. Why does the social mood reverse ever so often? The answer is because inflated economic activity and confidence burns out and reverses. Loss of confidence causes a collapse of credit which leads to substantial involuntary debt liquidation and many bankruptcies. If debt liquidation gets out of hand, the money stock collapses faster than it can be created as now. The key to the next few years is to preserve your assets/savings and diversify. This means unequivocally to spread your assets. Do not put all your eggs in one basket. A cash reserve in your possession is not all bad in case the printing presses fail to inflate as they intend to do. You can always change cash to gold coins. Needless to say, debt is a bad thing in deflation. In fact, it's a disaster. Try to get rid of your debt now or as much as you can. This includes real estate debt. When prices collapse as in the current Japanese deflation, cash and savings is king because as prices go down, cash becomes worth more and more. • Buy gold coins, especially one-ounce bullion coins, American Eagles. Buy some "junk silver" _U.S. 90% silver coins minted through 1964. • Buy Swiss francs in the form of a Swiss annuity. • Stash cash in U.S. dollars as long as we experience deflation or the threat of deflation. • Do not buy or hold stocks except some select quality gold stocks, i.e., Newmont, Royal Gold, Goldcorp, Agnico Eagle, Glamis Gold, Goldfields, Randgold, and/or Tocqueville Gold Fund. Buy now and hold for the big advance coming soon. The top could be three to four years out. Then we will sell and buy the New York Stock Market again which will eventually arrive at rock bottom with historical values. Please remember that at that point, the world economy will look like a black hole and you will be scared to death. In the meantime, the gold market will not go straight up. There will be corrections or shakeouts. Hold and build your position.
